IRR05376 Private collection, NSW ©Kunmanara (Wingu) Tingima / Copyright Agency, 2024 Wingu Tingima grew up in the Great Victoria Desert, near her birthplace, Nyumun, the rock hole at Kuru Ala, W.A. She had no contact with European people until her family, prompted by severe drought and atomic testing in the area, walked into the mission at Ernabella. By the time the Irrunytju community was established in the 1980s, Wingu was in her seventies but swiftly became one of the foremost artists at the Tjungu Palya art centre. Though she only painted during the ten years prior to her death at the age of about 90, her success was striking. Her confidence and fluidity burst upon the canvas with rich, mosaic-like colour and sinewy, sensuous linear elements evoking ancient imagery drawn from deep cultural knowledge. The rock holes in her country are sacred places for the seven sisters, Kungkarrakalpa, thus this Dreaming was the focus of most of Wingu’s paintings. In this work she depicted two rock holes with abundant water that she visited with her family and the liru (water snake) that lives here and protects the site. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

Kunmanara Wingu Tingima (c.1935-2010) Kuru Ala

        Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Wingu was born at a rockhole called Nyumun, in the Western Desert of Western Australia in the 1920s. She travelled by foot with her mother and father to the mission at Ernabella, where she worked spinning sheep's wool. Just 5 years before her death in 2010, she moved to Nyapari in South Australia and later Irrunytju in Western Australia, where she began painting. This is Kuru Ala, a sacred place for the Seven Sisters story. The sisters were travelling through this country. Wati Nyiiru was chasing them all over. He was a Ngankuri (magician) and could change into many forms to trick the sisters. He changed into a quandong tree, but when the sisters tasted it they knew it wasn't quite right.

Kunmanara Wingu Tingima (c.1925-2016) Nyumun 2003

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

A senior Pitjantjara woman, Wingu grew up in the semi-nomadic tradition at Nyumun, close by the rock hole at Kuru Ala, W.A., a sacred place for the seven sisters, Kungkarrakalpa. This story became the focus of many of her paintings. Though she only painted over the ten years before her death at the age of about 90, Wingu’s success as an artist was striking. She was considered a master of colour, knowing instinctively how to create effects through layers and texturing that make her works comparable to the depth and beauty of the star-filled desert skies. Wingu didn't illustrate events or depict her country explicitly, but evoked and alluded to ancient imagery drawn from deep cultural knowledge. Her ideas for paintings would often come to her in dreams or visitations from her totemic Eagle Ancestors, who could also forewarn her of significant events.

Wingu Kunmanara Tingima (c.1920-2010) Watiku Ngankurpa 2008

        Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Wingu was born at Nyumun rockhole, in the Western Desert of Western Australia. As a young woman she travelled by foot with her mother and father to the mission at Ernabella, but returned to the desert in her later years, She lived at Nyaparti in South Australia and Irruntyju in Western Australia, spending time with her two families. Wingu was a respected senior woman with much cultural knowledge, and painted the Tjukurpa associated with her country. The place of her birth is a sacred men's place called Walawuru Tjukurpa - Eagle Creation Story, which she could paint, but not talk about. The majority of her paintings are from the Kunkarrakalpa Tjukrupa (Seven Sisters creation story). Kuru Ala, one of the major sites she depicts is an important and sacred women's place.

Wingu Tingima circa 1930-2010 NYAPARI (2006) synthetic polymer paint on canvas 203 X 144CM PROVENANCE Tjungu Palya Artists, Alice Springs (stock TPWT06382) Aboriginal and Pacific Art, Sydney Private Collection, New South Wales Wingu Tingima paints the imagery that was passed down to her through many generations of rock art, sand drawings and ochre body painting. She creates fields of colour that create many layers that shimmer to allude to ancestral forces (tjukurpa). However Wingu's works are not explicit in illustrating events or depicting the landscape. With use of loose, gestural brushstrokes which represent punu marks and a rich palette of reds, oranges, purples and yellows, her work possesses a clear confidence. The artist's stories include the many sisters dreaming (Kungkarrakalpa or Minyma Tjuta Tjukurpa). This story is about the sisters who were travelling to Wannan in Western Australia. As they were walking they were followed by a lustful man (wati kula-kula) named Nyiru. He wanted one of the sisters as a wife, but he was an old man and neither of the sisters wanted him. To try and trick them, Nyiru pretended to be a quandong tree (wayanu), but when the sisters were gathering the fruit from the tree, they quickly realized his trickery and they hid in a cave. Nyiru followed them and so they kept running and they then saw a python (kuniya) at another rockhole. The sisters knew the kuniya was really Nyiru so they killed and cooked him, then sang and danced (inma). D'lan Davidson
