      (6) US NAVY PAYMENT APPROVALS THOS TINGEY - Six Documents dated Oct-Nov 1819, signed by Thomas Tingey (1750-1829), first Commandant and supervisor of construction of the Navy Yard in Washington, DC. With copies made for Commodore Stephen Decatur. These are all completely in the hand of Tingey, who even at age 69 was still in firm control of the office, he died while still serving in this position ten years later. Tingey, who was born in England, served in the Royal Navy, emigrated to the US, was a hero in the quasi-war with France. He was in charge of the construction of the yard beginning ion 1800, was made the first Commandant in 1804, was forced to burn the facility in 1814 as the British approached the city, went on to rebuild it and run it again. These notes are all concerning purchases for the fitting of ships. His daughter Margaret married Joseph F. Wingate, one of the first US Representatives from Maine, which may explain their being found in an attic here. 8" x 9 1/2". Poor condition, stained, losses at folds, but all autographs are good.
