Sutra From 1992 to June 1999 Sutra events were Bristol's biggest dance parties. No other club night in Bristol could offer a 1,500 to 2,500 capacity event with 4 or 5 rooms of dance music. Based at the University of the West of England (UWE) and run by the events team there, the music policy was varied, catering for the full range of styles from house, techno, jungle, drum 'n' bass, happy hardcore and even ambient. Sutra's first event took place in March 1992 with SL2 & Slipmatt headlining. By its the third event in October '92 with Carl Cox, Sutra had established itself as a key event in Bristol's dance music calendar. The largest Sutra event was its first birthday party for nearly 2,500 people with the likes of Ellis D, Ratty, Dougal, Dave Angel & John Kelly. Much of the inspiration was taken from Vibes Alive (its predecessor), the Universe events, the free party scene and Bristol's club culture. I like to think that Sutra's were like a miniature Universe event. I used contacts from the Universe parties such as dancers, stilt walkers and Rob from Universe would provide his inflatable stars for the outdoor marquee. We always tried to make it a real show with great visuals, lights and dÒcor as well as top DJs, MCs and live performances. We also used a lot of DJs and MCs from the Bristol scene such as Jody, MC/DJ Ribbs, Producer, Mach One, Vinyl Junkie, Die, Roni Size, Joe Peng, Jack Horner, Daddy G , Nick Warren and Oli Timmins. Maybe the key to success was a big student involvement in the nights, playing their part as resident DJs, dancers and the promotions team (aka the Sutra Crew). For many it was the highlight of their time spent in Bristol. ? In 1994, Sutra began a series of mid week monthly house nights called House of Sutra in a massive club in the centre of Bristol. These proved hugely popular, with packed nights including DJ legends Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Carl Cox (house set) and from the US David Morales & Frankie Knuckles and many more. Oli Timmins (British, b.1964) Big Love, 2008 Spray

    Est: £600 - £800

Oli Timmins (British, b.1964) Big Love, 2008 Spray paint and acrylic on canvas Signed on lower right edge 1/1 Original in this colour version Unframed 100cm x 100cm Provenance: Submitted for sale by the artist This image was originally produced in 1993 for Tribal Gathering and was used for flyers, posters and T-Shirts advertising the event. It has now been reproduced as an original canvas by the artist specifically for this sale. The first Tribal Gathering festival took place in April 1993 at Lower Pertwood Farm, Warminster, Wiltshire although original promoters Paul Shurey and Ian Jenkinson had been promoting raves since 1989. Tribal Gathering came at a time when the huge outdoor raves such as Perception, Vision, Raindance et al had begun to be eclipsed by club-culture. Recognising this change, but still wanting to retain and develop the festival feel, Paul and Ian pioneered the multi-arena dance event concept which, as the name Tribal Gathering suggested, brought together different dance music cultures and styles under one roof. TG 1993, with over 25 000 in attendance, saw Paul Oakenfold, Frankie Knuckles, Nick Warren, Danny Rampling, Pete Tong and David Morales at the same event as Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, DJ Rap LTJ Bukem, Groove Rider and The Prodigy. Although this maybe common place nowadays, with events such as Creamfields and Homelands, it was almost unheard at that time.
