ARTIST: CHARLES TICHON SIZE: 43 x 59 in./109.3 x 149.7 cm PRINTER: Imp. Kossuth, Paris DESCRIPTION: Tichon offers up a poster-within-a-poster scene to promote the services of the General Advertising Agency, “the only house that has made a specialty of everything related to advertising.” Interestingly, this same image was used to advertise the posters of Kossuth (see Collectionneur, 256) and even for a bicycle tire vulcanization firm (see PAI-XLII, 486). Apparently the image of a cycling poster-paster was favorable to all: the soft hat, the cigarette dangling from the corner of his scraggly, mustachioed mouth, the paste pot. Plus, take note of the way he’s carelessly standing on top of the roll of posters still left to be put up. What disrespect! (Art Nouveau; Posters on Posters; Bicycles)

It's the infant years for industrial agriculture, and Joseph de Bucy was at the forefront of it. In 1905 he retooled his small shop for the manufacture of agricultural engines; by the 1950s, they produced tractors under the Champion brand. (Automobile)

Artist: CHARLES TICHON Size: 60 3/4 x 44 in./154.5 x 111.6 cm Affiches Kossuth, Paris Little is known about Charles Tichon other than the numerous posters he accomplished for the tech industries of his day: agricultural machinery, aircraft and bicycles. His talent for artistic composition, in projecting emotion to these machines, is notable. For example, see how the swoop of the bike's crossbar in the foreground leads your eye directly up to the lady and her binoculars. She's giving you a specific look to observe: and your eye then traces a motion toward the postman's pointing finger: to the curious quad-bike built for two: suggesting that a lovely couple should go for a ride. There's a lot to see at Cycles Strock, and "cycles, motocycles, automobiles" are just the tip of it. (Bicycle)

Artist: CHARLES TICHON Size: 14 7/8 x 22 in./37.8 x 56 cm Imp Kossuth, Paris A nude redhead flying along with her Gladiator cycle, this is not. This is about five years later, as Gladiator augments its product line with automobiles, and makes a distinct play toward social-class climbers. A woman of means, in her furs, is chauffeured in (what appears to be) a 1900 Gladiator 6 1/2HP along with two footmen, smiling gaily – while the beleaguered-looking villager peddles huffily alongside. None of the rain and wind that plagued the event are present in this grandiloquent Tichon design, overflowing with the hope and fascination attached to the newfound technology.
