EXHIBITED: Chicago, Illinois, "The World's Columbian Exhibition," 1893 (partial label verso). Frances Hunt Throop was a New York artist who trained at the Art Students League and in Paris, and specialized in portraiture and still life painting. She frequently combined both genres in a single format as she did in the present work entitled Spring Carnations, which was exhibited in the Fine Arts Palace of the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. The artist married attorney Samuel H. Ordway the following year, in 1894, and lived in East Hampton, Long Island. Her productivity seems to have declined following her marriage.
