    William Anslow Thornbery / Thornley (British, 1847-1907). This oil painting on canvas is signed "W. A. Thornbery", lower right, and also bears an attributed plaque. The work depicts several ships at harbor. It is housed in a gilt frame with a dark blue border. The painting has craquelure, as well as varnish discoloration due to previous smoke exposure and age. The frame's inner gilt border is cracking. The canvas measures 14" x 12", and the frame measures 21 1/2" x 19 1/2". In-house shipping is available. (44.5 x 76.2cm.) * Provenance: Stephen Garratt Fine Paintings, London W14, c.1989. ** Canvas has been relined. Original stretcher. Canvas in good condition overall and clean. Some retouching and repainting visible under UV, particularly to the shoreline at lower left, shadow beneath central barge and in places among the clouds. Some strengthening visible to detail on the boats and distant shoreline.
