        • William Theed the Younger (1804-1891),
          Sep. 10, 2024

          William Theed the Younger (1804-1891),

          Est: £1,000 - £1,500

William Theed the Younger (1804-1891), 'Roma', a carved marble bust of a classical figure, signed verso 'William Theed Fecit', titled and dated '1830', 31cm wide 23cm deep 47cm high 64cm high including socle Provenance: The selected contents of North Road House, Hertfordshire. William Theed lived in Rome between 1826 and 1848 where he studied and worked in the workshops of the neoclassical artists Bertel Thorvaldsen, John Gibson and Richard James Wyatt. Following a recommendation from the sculptor John Gibson, Theed received his first commission from Prince Albert in 1847, for two marble statues for Osborne House in the idealised classical style. Theed returned to London in 1848 and became one of the leading and most prolific artists of the period, and favourite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It was with Prince Albert in particular with whom he established a close connection, and it was Albert who commissioned him in 1856 to create six colossal marble busts of classical figures after the antique to be placed in the gallery above the grand staircase at Buckingham Palace, most of which remain on display to this day.

        • William Theed The Younger, Sculpture of Humphrey Chetham
          Jun. 26, 2024

William Theed The Younger, Sculpture of Humphrey Chetham

          Est: $1,000 - $2,000

(British, 1804-1891) seated with a schoolboy at the base in the uniform of Chetham's Hospital, after the large marble in the Manchester Cathedral, signed or inscribed "Opus Wm. Theed.1856." also inscribed on side of base "Humfredo Chetham/Hospith Et Bibliotheca Fundatori/D.D. Gratus Alumnus./MDCCCLIII", gilt bronze and sheet metal, 24 x 12-3/4 x 16 in. (60.96 x 28.58 x 40.64 cm.) Note: The school, founded by Chetham, is now incorporated into a well-known music school. Appropriately enough, the boy holds the Bible open at Psalm 112, and is pointing at verse 9, which praises the good, charitable man who "hath dispersed abroad, and given to the poor," and whose "righteousness remaineth forever." Beside the boy are his cap and another couple of books, also appropriate because Chetham's Library, part of this enlightened merchant's legacy, was "the greatest of all the early town libraries" (qtd. in Hartwell 68); it continues to function as a free reference library today (see "Chetham's Library"). The whole monument is a brilliant example of Theed's gift for "historical realism" (Greenwood)." WILLIAM THEED

          Est: €8,000 - €12,000

          Est: £800 - £1,200

William Theed the younger (British 1804-1891): a white marble bust of a gentleman, signed and dated 'Roma 1830', 19in. high. NB Born in Trentham, Staffordshire and initially trained by his father, William Theed the younger, worked for several years in a studio of E.H. Bailey the Sculptor, and on the 15th January, 1820 was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools. In 1826 he went to Rome. In Rome, Theed is believed to have studied under Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and Italian Pietra Tenerani, as well as John Gibson and Richard James Wyatt. After nearly 20 years in Rome he received a commission from Prince Albert, the then Prince Consort, to send designs for statues to be placed in Osborne House. Two designs by Theed were accepted 'Narcissus at the fountain' and 'Psyche lamenting the loss of Cupid', both in marble. Theed returned to London in 1848 and soon established a highly successful professional practice. In 1851 he displayed three pieces at The Great Exhibition, the most notable a marble of 'The Prodigal's Return' which was a life-size piece. From London he made further pieces for the Prince Consort, including a series of mythological reliefs for the reception rooms of Buckingham Palace. His works can also be seen in the Prince's Chamber in the Palace of Westminster, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Balmoral Castle.
