Abbott Handerson Thayer (1849–1921) was an American painter and naturalist known for his portraits, landscapes, and particularly for his depictions of angels. Here are key points about Abbott Handerson Thayer:1. **Early Life:** Abbott Thayer was born on August 12, 1849, in Boston, Massachusetts, into an artistic and intellectual family. His father was a doctor, and his mother was a poet.2. **Artistic Training:** Thayer initially studied art at the Brooklyn Art School and later at the National Academy of Design in New York City. He continued his studies in Paris, where he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts.3. **Return to the United States:** Thayer returned to the United States and became associated with the American Pre-Raphaelite movement. He gained recognition for his portraits and landscapes.4. **Influence of Naturalism:** Thayer was influenced by naturalism and became known for his detailed and realistic depictions of nature. He often painted animals and landscapes with great precision.5. **Portraits:** Thayer painted portraits of notable individuals, including his famous portrait of President Grover Cleveland. His portraits were characterized by sensitivity and attention to detail.6. **Angels and Allegorical Works:** Thayer is perhaps best known for his paintings of angels and allegorical subjects. His angelic figures, often depicted in soft and ethereal settings, gained popularity.7. **Military Camouflage:** During World War I, Thayer applied his understanding of natural patterns and colors to military camouflage. He worked on developing camouflage techniques to conceal military equipment.8. **Interest in Ornithology:** Thayer had a strong interest in ornithology (the study of birds) and published a book titled "Concealing-Coloration in the Animal Kingdom" in collaboration with his son, Gerald Handerson Thayer.9. **Personal Life:** Thayer married Kate Bloede in 1875, and they had three children together. One of their children, Gerald, became a well-known naturalist.10. **Death:** Abbott Handerson Thayer died on May 29, 1921, in Dublin, New Hampshire.11. **Legacy:** Thayer's contributions to American art, particularly his explorations of naturalistic themes and his innovative work in camouflage, are recognized. His paintings of angels continue to be admired for their delicate and spiritual qualities.12. **Reevaluation:** Thayer's reputation experienced a reevaluation in the latter half of the 20th century, with increased interest in his contributions to American art and his pioneering work in camouflage.Abbott Handerson Thayer's dual pursuits in art and naturalism reflect a unique combination of artistic sensibility and scientific curiosity. His influence extends beyond his paintings to include his contributions to the understanding of animal coloration and camouflage. Measures 30 x 24.25.

ABBOTT H. THAYER (American, 1849-1921) SLEEPING CAT graphite on paper signed and dated, c.r. 5 x 7 in. Provenance: Henrietta M. ("Rita") & Peter N. Heydon, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Other Notes: The Rita & Peter Heydon Collection of Cat Paintings represents the culmination of four decades of passionate collecting by two lovers of felines. The Heydons adopted their first cat, a barn stray named "Marmalade," shortly before they married in 1968. Over their 47 year marriage, they adopted nearly one hundred cats, giving each a distinctive food name (Capuccino, Meatloaf, Mushroom, and Gravy, to name a few). Furthermore, Rita dedicated much of her life to the adoption of stray, abandoned, or unwanted felines through the Heydon's private charity, The Mosaic Feline Refuge. In 27 years of operation, the Refuge found adoptive homes for more than 3,000 cats. In 1979, the Heydons purchased their first feline oil painting from The Graham Gallery in New York. Over four decades, they continued their collecting of delightful and whimsical cat paintings during their travels to New York, England, and France. Their genuine affection for these felines is evident in their heartfelt and personal collection, and Peter hopes that buyers recognize not only the charm of the felines depicted in these paintings but also the aesthetic energy and creativity that so many of the artists brought to their subjects.

Abbott H. Thayer (American, 1849-1921) Portrait of Helen Bigelow Merriman Signed and dated "Abbott H. Thayer 1890" u.l., bears ACA Gallery, New York, label on verso. Oil on canvas, 43 3/4 x 34 in. (109.8 x 86.4 cm), unframed. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, craquelure, and surface grime. Provenance: Ex collection Cincinnati Art Museum, Gift of Rev. Daniel Merriman in 1895 as Portrait of a Lady; through to the current owner. N.B. Helen Bigelow Merriman (1844-1933) was an artist, art historian, author, and philanthropist. She is shown in this portrait holding a paint brush. The only child of Worcester carpet mogul Erastus Bigelow, Helen inherited the family fortune, art collection, and summer residence, "Stonehurst Manor." She married Reverend Daniel Merriman, Pastor of the Central Congregational Church of Worcester, and had one son, Roger Merriman. The Merrimans were active proponents of the arts during Worcester's golden age. Mrs. Merriman took an active role in the Worcester Art Society, which was established in 1877, giving lectures on art history. She also served as president of the North Conway Public Library and founded Memorial Hospital in memory of her parents. Her husband, Reverend Daniel Merriman, was the first president of the Worcester Art Museum. Helen Merriman wrote a small, 36-page booklet entitled Concerning Portraits and Portraiture, which she presented at the Worcester Art Society in February of 1891. In it she discussed Abbott Thayer's methods, noting that she had observed the artist at work. She did not, however, specifically reference her portrait sessions with Thayer. Thayer's logs now at the Smithsonian indicate that Daniel Merriman paid $500 for his wife's portrait.

ABBOTT HANDERSON THAYER (American, 1849-1921) Preliminary Study for "A Virgin," circa 1891 Oil on canvas 13 x 9-1/2 inches (33.0 x 24.1 cm) FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST PROVENANCE: The artist; Edith Henderson, Dublin, New Hampshire and Cambridge, Massachusetts, gift from the above (no relation to the artist, but rather a neighbor of his who served as a model for one of the girls in the present work (note verso)); Alfred J. Walker Fine Art, Boston, Massachusetts. EXHIBITED: Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler, Texas, "The Cornish Art Colony: Giants of America's Gilded Age," January 16-April 17, 2011, no. 23. This painting is a preliminary study for Thayer's celebrated work, A Virgin (collection of the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), purchased by noted collector and founder of the Freer Gallery of Art, Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919). Freer originally hung A Virgin above the landing in the stair hall of his Detroit residence where, like the Winged Victory in the Louvre, it could be appreciated from various vantage points. Freer acknowledged Thayer's visual allusion in 1910 by ordering a plaster cast of the Winged Victory to be displayed beside A Virgin in an exhibition at the University of Michigan, along with other important works on Asian and American art from his collection. Thayer produced this study, and conceived the idea for A Virgin, shortly following the death of his wife in 1891. The work is a group portrait of his children Gladys, Mary and Gerald. He originally envisioned the central figure, Mary (who temporarily took charge of Gladys and Gerald), as Flora, the Greek goddess of flowers, but as the work progressed he decided to make her a Greek "Victory" figure instead, with clouds billowing behind her like wings. This lot retains its original custom-made frame by William F. Scott, signed and dated verso: W. F. Scott 8-14-89.

[Provenance: According to the consignor, this painting was the collaborative effort of Abbott Handerson Thayer (American 1849 - 1921) and Emma Beach Thayer (American 1850 - 1924). It is allegedly a portrait of Viola Cockcroft, "Aunt Ola," a friend of Emma Beach Thayer (second wife to well-known painter Abbott Handerson Thayer). It is said that Emma started the painting, and upon her inability to finish it for reasons unspecified, Abbott finished it for her, but did not sign it because it was not entirely his work.]
