Joan Josep Tharrats Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Plastic Art, b. 1918 - d. 2001

Joan-Josep Tharrats i Vidal (1918 in Girona – 2001 in Barcelona) was a Spanish painter, art theorist and publisher.

Born into an industrialist family, his father was the businessman and poet Josep Tharrats i Vilà. From 1932 to 1935 he lived in Béziers, before relocating to Barcelona where he studied at the Escola Massana. The Spanish Civil War brought his studies to an end, and he wouldn't resume his art career until 1942. His initial style was akin to Impressionism but moved into abstraction as the influence of Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky became more important to him. From 1946 on he used collage techniques. In 1947 he was introduced to artists Arnau Puig Grau, Joan Ponç, Modest Cuixart, Antoni Tàpies, Joan Brossa and Josep Vicenç Foix at the Institut Français in Barcelona. With some of these artists he founded the group Dau al Set, which published the magazine of the same name, printed in his atelier.

He was one of the most visible artists in the local avantgarde art of the post-war years. His style evolved from lineal abstraction influenced by surrealism (during his Dau al Set years) towards Art Informel working with texture, color and graphism. His work also includes a variety of posters, books, murals, stained glass, mosaics, jewelry and opera scenography. També va fer cartells, il·lustrà llibres i va fer murals, vitralls, mosaics, joies i fins i tot escenografies d'òpera (Spleen de 1984).

He had an individual exhibition in 1949 at the El Jardín gallery in Barcelona and became one of the most important Catalan artists in the international scene. From 1954 onwards he became a fixture of the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona and from 1955 in Stockholm and New York City. In 1959 his work was exhibited at the 5th São Paulo Biennale and at the Venice Biennale of 1960 and 1964. In 1966 he founded the Associació d'Artistes Actuals.

In 2000, Tharrats himself collaborated with monumental and small oil paintings in his last exhibition which was organized by Galeria Taüll of Barcelona.

In 2009, an important traveling exhibition called "Les maculatures de Tharrats" was arranged by the Cultural Department of the Diputació de Barcelona.

JOAN JOSEP THARRATS VIDAL (Girona, 1918 - Barcelona, 2001). Untitled, 1993 Mixed media and collage on paper. Signed and dated in the lower margin. Measurements: 50 x 35 cm; 81,5 x 66,5 cm (frame). In this painting with collage on paper made by Tharrats in the nineties, towards the end of his life, we can contemplate the consolidation of a language of informalist roots, which on this occasion stages the symbolic struggle between energy fields materialized in the form of chaotic strokes of calligraphic echoes and gestural impulses. After beginning his training in Béziers (France), in 1935 Tharrats returns to Barcelona and enters the Massana School. He began his artistic activity after the Civil War, in a style that evolved from a certain initial impressionism towards a progressive abstraction, through the influences of Mondrian and Kandinsky. Co-founder of Dau al Set together with Brossa, Ponç, Cuixart and Tàpies, Tharrats made his individual debut in 1949, at the El Jardín galleries in Barcelona. From 1954 he exhibited regularly at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona, as well as in 1955 in Stockholm and New York, in 1959 at the Biennial of São Paulo, and in Venice at the Biennials of 1960 and 1964. In 1955, after the dissolution of Dau al Set, he participated in the constitution of the Taüll group together with Muxart, Guinovart and his former colleagues Cuixart and Tàpies. Eleven years later, in 1966, he was also a founder of the Association of Contemporary Artists. A pioneer of post-war Catalan avant-gardism, Tharrats evolved from the surrealist-influenced linear abstraction of his Dau al Set period to a richly textured, colorful, free-form informalism. Apart from easel painting, he developed his own version of printmaking techniques ("maculaturas"), and also made posters, book illustrations, murals, stained glass, mosaics, jewelry and opera scenographies. In 1983 he was awarded the Cross of Sant Jordi, and in 1994 the National Prize of Plastic Arts. That same year he joined the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Jordi. His work is present in various museums and collections around the world, such as the MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the MACBA or the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid.

Co-founder of Dau al Set together with Brossa, Ponç, Cuixart and Tàpies, Tharrats made his individual debut in 1949 at the El Jardín galleries in Barcelona. From 1954 he exhibited regularly at the Sala Gaspar in Barcelona, as well as in 1955 in Stockholm and New York, in 1959 at the São Paulo Biennial, and in Venice at the Biennials of 1960 and 1964. In 1955, after the dissolution of Dau al Set, he took part in the formation of the Taüll group together with Muxart, Guinovart and his former colleagues Cuixart and Tàpies. Eleven years later, in 1966, he also founded the Asociación de Artistas Actuales. A pioneer of post-war Catalan avant-gardism, Tharrats evolved from the surrealist-influenced linear abstraction of his Dau al Set period towards an informalism of rich texture, abundant colour and free graphics. Apart from easel painting, he developed his own version of printmaking techniques ("maculatures"), and also made posters, book illustrations, murals, stained glass, mosaics, jewellery and opera scenographies. In 1983 he was awarded the Cross of Sant Jordi, and in 1994 the National Prize for Plastic Arts. That same year he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi. His work can be found in various museums and collections around the world, such as the MoMA and the Guggenheim in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the MACBA and the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.

In this painting made by Tharrats in the seventies, we can contemplate the consolidation of a language of material and informalist roots, which on this occasion stages the symbolic struggle between chaos (represented by the marble magma that emerges from the ground) and the cosmos (symbolised by the floating circles, of perfect geometry). After beginning his training in Béziers (France), in 1935 Tharrats returned to Barcelona and enrolled at the Massana School. He began his artistic activity after the Civil War, in a style that evolved from a certain initial impressionism towards a progressive abstraction, through the influences of Mondrian and Kandinsky.
