The Kaaba is a stone building at the center of Islam's most important mosque and holiest site, the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Born in Alagam Kulam village near Madurai, South India, Syed Thajudeen joined his Malaysian-born parents in Penang when he was 11 and stayed on until his lower secondary education. He returned to Madras to study at the Government College of Arts and Crafts (1967-1974), with a Diploma in Painting 1973 and a Post-Diploma in painting in 1974. He held his first solo at the Penang State Art Gallery (PSAG) in 1975 followed by another at the Samat Gallery in Kuala Lumpur. In 2015, the PSAG honoured Syed Thajudeen with a retrospective. His other notable solos include Seroja (2002), Love And Its Many Splendoured Things (2004), Cinta Tercipta, There Is Love (2006, 2007), Women in Kebaya (2007), Paintings On Love (2010). Love is in the air, as always, in the art repertoire of Syed Thajudeen, an incorrigible romantic who’s always sanctifying the eternal bliss of love between a couple. A woman in floral sarong, the muse of Cinta Tercipta, floats in a subterranean realm across two panels of the triptych, with admiring fishes like suitors all over and some even nibbling at parts of her body, like a tender caress. Her long tresses are held up by her hands as if in a doa (prayer) and ritual. The woman is in an ecstatic state of Rasa, a heightened mood of emotional bliss. It’s an utopia incarnate of surreal dimensions with even a pair of fishes kissing and lotus buds lolling like procreating cells. This work was not shown in Syed Thajudeen’s Retrospective exhibition at the Penang State Art Gallery in 2015, but was among the 53 works in the Cinta Tercipta… And There Is Love solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2006, and which was reprised at Pelita Hati Gallery of Art in 2007. Syed Thajudeen was the first Malaysian artist to receive tutelage at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras (1967-1974), at the time of the birth of modern Indian art with groups like the Bengal School, Calcutta School, Bombay Progressives, Progressive Artists Group and Baroda Group and pioneers like Raja Ravi Varma. Among his notable country-selected exhibitions are the Contemporary Paintings of Malaysia (Pasadena, 1988); Rupa Malaysia (London, 1998); Malaysian Art 1965-1978 (London, 1978); World Expo in Shanghai (2010); Olympic Games art exhibition (London, 2012); and the Bangladesh Biennale in 1983.

Syed Thajudeen was born in 1943 in India. He is well-known for his large scale mural paintings of epic proportions set in period landscapes. Though born in India, Syed Thajudeen spent his life in Penang, Malaysia, before pursuing an art education at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras, India. He then graduated with a post diploma in Fine Arts in 1974 and returned to Malaysia to be a lecturer in Fine Arts at Institut Teknologi MARA. In this particular oil on canvas triptych piece, Syed Thajudeen uses various tones and hues of colour to depict a woman surrounded by marine life and floral beings, exuding a sense of tranquility.

Here, Miss Pucker Lips seems a little anxioius as she waits for her secret lover in this paradisiacal natural settings complete with palm trees, something the belle could hide and hug as in most breadline Bollywood movies complete with songs and dancers. With a massive booty, you half expect the maiden to do some twerking if sheâs transported to today, in the US of America perhaps. But a solid bum according to traditionalists is a splendid sign of a great child-bearing receptacle. But Syed Thajudeenâs world is what makes the world go round: Love, sensual and playful with the tree stumps like phallic symbols, heightening the womanâs innermost desires. In Indian mythology, such scenes are often played out as that of the super nova lothario Lord Krishna, who is seldom depicted because he is a divine presence, spending time with his purported harem of Gopis or if only one, his consort Radha. Syed Thajudeenâs tutelage at the Government College of Arts and Crafts (1967-1974) was at a time of the most seminal changes in art in India. ‘Waiting For The Lover’ is a recurrent theme in Syed Thajudeen Shaik Abu Talib’s repertoire. Convoluted in technique yet simple in its message – this describes perfectly the work that is presented here. Syed Thajudeen’s works known to be romantic, lyrical and spiritual to a point are no different than this one. He sketches love, or rather a longing for it. Capturing his subject (with the distinguishable eyes and lips amidst the chaos), with her head dipped in a shy manner, and a shawl wrapped loosely around her shoulders, she patiently waits for her lover. This ink-on-paper work, otherwordly and glorious, catches your attention for long moments, willing you to come by and dissect the true meaning of it as well as explore the artistry that effectually created this masterpiece. Syed Thajudeen was born Syed Thajudeen Shaik Abu Talib and is known as one of the best poetic artists in the Malaysian art industry. Initially sent to study medicine in India, the fire he had for art could not be distinguished. Convincing his parents to let him study art, he eventually attended the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras. His works are exhibited by Galeri PETRONAS, the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and the Singapore Art Museum.

The notion of romance is represented by the colour of passion, red and imaginatively executed in a dreamlike psychedelic manner. Syed Thajudeen's personal Indian background and Indian traditional painting styles fused with Malay cultural elements create his own unique style and an aesthetic sense drawn from these inspirations.
