BLICK AUF DAS ALTE MAILAND MIT DEM DOM IN DER FERNE Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 24,5 x 32,5 cm. Links unten signiert. In Prunkrahmen. Im Inneren der Altstadt ein von der Sonne beschienenes Gebäude mit drei Frauen, die vor einem steineren Türbogen mit Vorhang stehen, hinter dem eine Waage und Ware in Säcken erkennbar ist, die sie verkaufen möchten. Nach links führt eine schmale Treppe nach oben, flankiert von dicht stehenden Häusern, sodass kein Sonnenlicht durchkommt; im Hintergrund sind unter grauem Himmel Teile des Doms erkennbar. Anmerkung: Der Künstler war der Sohn des Malers J.B. Tetar der Elfen. Er malte zunächst romantische Landschaften, später mehr Stadtlandschaften. Er lebte und arbeitete in Amsterdam, unternahm aber längere Studienreisen nach Italien und Paris und lebte ab 1881 in Mailand. (14110218) (18)

This scene bears witness to Dutch painter Peter Tetar van Elven's sensitivity to authentic scenes. It is a rare view of Alexandria, probably painted in the early 1860s when he was traveling in the Orient (Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Turkey). In the shadow of the foreground, we can make out the wooden panels with their typically Ottoman decor. The Egyptian woman watches over her two children, one of whom is bathing. In the background, the bustling, sun-drenched city lends a deep perspective to the scene. A 19th-century Dutch painter renowned for his architectural views, landscapes and cityscapes, Peter Tetar van Elven trained in Amsterdam and The Hague, before a long stay in Italy from 1853 to 1863, where he was appointed court painter to King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy (circa 1858-1861). In 1866, he left for the Orient, perhaps in the company of Tinco Lycklama in Nijeholt, whom he portrayed several times in oriental garb. In 1869, he settled in Paris for a few years before returning to the Netherlands in 1873. He died in Milan in 1908.

Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Born in Molenbeek (Brussels), Tetar van Elven was the son and pupil of the Dutch painter and print-maker Jean-Baptist Tetar van Elven (1805-1889). In 1846 he moved to Holland to pursue his studies at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam and the Academy of Drawings in The Hague. After then spending time in Paris, he moved to Rome in 1858 and enjoyed successes as a painter at the Court of Victor Emmanuel II. By the time Tetar van Elven began to practice topographical painting he had already become popular among European artists and their patrons. The vogue for topography was inspired by Rousseau's call for a return to nature, technical developments in watercolour - the highly portable medium most commonly used by topographical painters - and an increased appreciation for the beauty of the European landscape.

The current highest auction record for a similar painting by van Elven Tetar is more than €25,000 Pierre Henri Théodore Tetar van Elven was one of the 19th century artists who painted motifs from the Orient during the process of the European spirit of domination over the Islamic world. The present painting with an architectural backdrop shows the artist’s typical loose and impressionistic brushwork and is most likely located in North Africa. Condition: The painting is overall in good condition. The canvas is slightly waved. The gilt wooden frame shows some wear consistent with age. The dimensions of the stretcher are 41 x 33 cm, and the frame is 51.5 x 43.5 cm in size. Pierre Henri Théodore Tetar van Elven (1828-1908) Pierre Henri Théodore Tetar van Elven was most likely born in Amsterdam and was the son of Jan Baptist (1805-1879). He studied with J. E. J. van den Berg at the Design Academy in The Hague. Since about 1851, he lived in Turin. He was court painter to Victor Emmanuel II. and participated in the Austrian campaign. Around 1861/74, he sojourned in Paris. Tetar van Elven made trips to Asia Minor, North Africa and India and painted architectural images, landscapes and genre scenes. Today, works of the artist are in major museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Nationalgalerie in Berlin and the Museo d'Arte Moderna in Turin.
