Czech-Austrian sculptor, graphic artist and puppeteer, Teschner spent most of his career working in Vienna, and was a member of the Wiener Werkstätte. He became best known for his 140 elaborately-decorated, Viennese Art Nouveau puppets, which he staged in theatrical performances for over four decades. Teschner created a few poster designs, including at least two travel posters for the Kaiserlich-Königlich [Imperial - Royal] Austro-Hungarian Railway route within the Czech lands. This one features a view of Prague's Charles Bridge, Mala Strana and the statue of Saint Wenceslas, sculpted by Josef Václav Myslbek . The statue was unveiled in 1913. One of the insets at the bottom depicts the castle of Karlstejn and the other one of the sulfur fountains at the famed Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) spa town. This is the German version.

In the past, women were often attributed special and supernatural abilities. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, spiritualistic, decadent and existential themes developed rapidly in the Czech artistic environment, and Richard Teschner joined this current. He not only projected his visions into puppet shows, but also created paintings and graphics depicting witches as ugly and cruel beings who secretly gather and cultivate the dark sides of the human heart. Published by: Merhaut, L., Urban, O.M., Vojtěch, D.: Decadence: In Diseased Colors: The Idea of Decadence and Art in the Czech Lands 1880-1914, Arbor Vitae, Prague, 2006. p. 279. RICHARD TESCHNER (Carlsbad 1979 - 1948 Vienna)

            Est: €400 - €800

RICHARD TESCHNER (Carlsbad 1979 - 1948 Vienna) Rowers 1933 watercolor/paper, 21,7 x 15,3 cm monogrammed rT and dated 1933 Provenance: Johann Kosmath, estate Siegrid Kosmath, private property ESTIMATE °€ 400 - 800 Artist of the Viennese Art Nouveau. Comes from Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary) in Bohemia. Studied at the Academy of Arts in Prague and the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna. Artisan, puppeteer, member of the Wiener Werkstätte. In the environment of Gustav Klimt, spent summer vacations at Lake Attersee. Inspired by Javanese puppet theater, fairy tales and legends, he created oil paintings and graphics also stick puppets and stage decorations with fantastical motifs and figure paintings such as the rowers. Born and raised in Bohemia, Richard Teschner first studied at the Art Academy in Prague and later at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. After moving to Vienna, he joined the Wiener Werkstätte. From 1910 on, like Gustav Klimt, he belonged to a group of artists and creatives who were regular guests of the k. u. k. (“imperial and royal”, referring to the Habsburgs dual monarchy Austria-Hungary) court carpenter Friedrich Paulick. The group spent their summer holidays in Paulicks villa at lake Attersee. There Teschner met the host's daughter, Emma Paulick, whom he married in 1911. This advantageous marriage gave him financial independence. Inspired by the Javanese stick puppet theater, he subsequently turned to painting and graphics as well as puppetry and designed his own stick puppets and proscenium stages. His paintings and graphics are influenced, among other things, by elements from Asian culture as well as fairy tales and legends. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked ° in the catalog), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13% is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.
