      • Tennant (Stephen) My Brother Aquarius, first edition, association copy with lengthy signed presentation inscription to Ruth Pitter, 1961.
        Sep. 19, 2024

Tennant (Stephen) My Brother Aquarius, first edition, association copy with lengthy signed presentation inscription to Ruth Pitter, 1961.

        Est: £1,000 - £1,500

Tennant (Stephen) My Brother Aquarius, first edition, association copy with lengthy signed presentation inscription to Ruth Pitter "who has so deeply understood my poems - with gratitude and admiration I give you this little book of Poems...", with Pitter's book-label and other dedications and quotes from Tennant on endpapers in his blue ink, frontispiece, one or two spots, original boards, dust-jacket, lightly creased and damp-stained on back panel, light fraying to spine ends, still overall a lovely copy, 1961; together with 2 ALs from Tennant to Pitter responding to her compliments, on his letterhead paper; and 2pp. manuscript notes by Pitter, v.s. (5) *** Ruth Pitter was a British poet and first woman to receive the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1955, and was appointed CBE in 1979 to honour her many contributions to English literature. Though the letters from Tennant's infer a complimentary review from Pitter "your letter is so deep a joy to me..." the two pages of accompanying notes on scrap paper reveal a slightly more acerbic analysis on his poetry: "far too many - 2...he boldly (rashly!) goes for the absolutes head-on, where we snoop round a look furtively for the entrance...". All together a delightful and revealing collection of Tennant/Pitter material.  This lot is sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

STEPHEN TENNANT (1906-1986) "Marseilles, Villes d'oeillades!" * "Scent Adieu Sagesse! toute l'heures." *

        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

STEPHEN TENNANT (1906-1986) "Marseilles, Villes d'oeillades!" * "Scent Adieu Sagesse! toute l'heures." * Double-sided color drawing, with notations in French, by Tennant, within images. Mixed media, with watercolor, crayon, pen, and ink on paper. 235x200 mm; 9 1/4x7 7/8 inches, full sheet, the paper once folded in half horizontally, with hard fold (partly separating). Signed "Stephen Tennant" in ink. Recto contains numerous portraits of Marseille locals. A note in the upper right corner reads (in English) "A book doesn't need a precedent." The verso contains a verdant waterside scene of nude women among grapevines, rendered in yellow, with a small menu sketched below signature, reading "Le Café Brasil." British writer and aristocrat Stephen Tennant cultivated a life of glamour if accomplishing little professionally during his life. As one of the most colorful members of London's "Bright Young Things," the group of Bohemian socialites in the 1920s, he stood out for his flamboyance, beauty, and wit, among his more productive companions who included Harold Acton, Cecil Beaton, Evelyn Waugh, the Mitfords and the Sitwells, though he did inspire numerous characters in their novels. His own literary and artistic ambitions were fostered by such illustrious friends as Willa Cather, E.M. Forster, the Bloomsbury Group members, and Siegfried Sassoon, with whom he had a romantic relationship. The majority of his surviving - and now coveted - writing and artwork was centered around his novel "Lascar," which remained unfinished at his death, despite several decades devoted to its creation. Some of the drawings for Lascar have come on the market and the ones offered here, which bear a strong resemblance to those, may also have been intended for the book.

TENNANT, Stephen (1906-1987). Approx 56 autograph letters and four postcards signed to Arthur Waley and (the majority) Beryl de Zoete, mostly Wilsford Manor, also London, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Paris and elsewhere, 18 January [?1929] - 10 July 1951 and n.d., a few illustrated with drawings of flowers, the three postcards bearing portraits of Tennant, with three other portrait postcards unused. While Tennant's letters do include references to his artistic and literary experiments and outlook ('My life is a curious mixture of interest & futility ... My work is a system of reflection -- or is that too paradoxical?'; 'One of the most tragic things in life is that one cannot share the idiosyncracies of one's personal vision'), much of the correspondence is almost a stream of consciousness in his inimitably fey style: 'yes, it was thrilling when the swing-door that had given up everyone except Arthur suddenly relented, & my reveries .... were sent spinning and in the waste land of my direct vision stood -- no -- came -- but dear me -- what good letters we write ... Where was I? -- my string-bag of encomiums of Arthur has burst'; on his relationship with Siegfried Sassoon: 'Siegfried rides on the downs & looks very superb, -- brown and vigorous, -- he comes in from his rides, -- welcome thudding footsteps on the stairs -- & then in he comes -- glowing & tired -- bringing a smell of Down airs & that nice smelling saddle-leather. -- & sits down on my silver bed'. References to William Walton, Cecil Beaton (described as 'a cheap vulgarian' in 1945), Auden, the Sitwells and others track the evolution of Tennant's personal relationships, often in the later letters wondering at his alienation from them -- a mood that extends to Waley himself in 1950: 'Somehow, I never thought we would cease to be friends. -- Your friendship was something I was sure of. -- Never mind'.
