Among the most famous is the “Mother and Child” series, which was included in the national collection in the 1990s, making him stand together with Liu Kang, Georgette Chen, and other 1st generation masters, well-known as “The Grandfather of Singapore Sculpture." Through his profound insight into the human body, especially of women and motherhood figurations, he created the rounded, warm, and straightforward figurations to discuss the power of maternal love. Eng Teng has an experimental and exploratory spirit in materials. Working in various mediums for creation, including ciment fondu, clay, ceramics, bronze, wood, etc., each of these uniquely shaped and formed works demonstrates Eng Teng’s extraordinary imagination and creativity, as well as his exquisite control over the texture and feel of materials. Either rough or smooth, concave or convex, he would choose the most suitable form and medium according to the different emotions he wished to express with each piece, making them vivid and full. The NUS Museum now holds an extensive collection of Eng Teng’s works of over 1100 pieces, which remains to be the most comprehensive collection devoted to a single artist in Singapore. The work featured in this auction was produced earlier than the other large-scale sculptures of the same name, which has a special significance to the subsequent creations. Its tranquil and harmonious composition not only shows physical intimacy but also captures subdued emotions. Sculpting was not the only thing Ng Eng Teng had an aptitude for. The artist departed from his famed medium to produce brilliant artworks, such as the ‘The Old and New Dress of the Malaysian Lady, 1960’. In this piece, he successfully portrays two Malay women donned in their traditional attire, the baju kebaya. In the background, a Malay lady wears a farmer’s hat on her head and simple, plain-hued baju kebaya while sitting in a demure position. Meanwhile, in the foreground, Ng meticulously paints a lady dressed in a vibrant, intricately designed baju kebaya with accessories and a shawl to match. These women symbolise the transformation of the traditional Malay garment from a simple design to one that is more elaborate, keeping up with the times. The faded, washed- out look to this piece of painting gives it a nostalgic and historical mood. The artist follows suit many pioneer artists such as Chua Thean Teng and Khalil Ibrahim in painting the popular subject of Malay ladies in their Sunday best, during the 1960s.

Upon his return, he began to actively and creatively produce large sculptures, most of which became notably famed such as Wealth, Mother and Child and The Explorer. These sculptures are still displayed in public spaces in Singapore. A recipient of Singapores Cultural Medallion Award and ASEANs Cultural Award for Visual Arts, he believed in free creation and education."

Dubbed the "Grandfather of Singapore Sculpture", Ng Eng Teng who was born on July 12, 1934, studied painting under first-generation masters such as Georgette Chen and Liu Kang. He then moved to England to further his studies in ceramics. Upon returning to Singapore in 1966, Eng Teng produced prolific works throughout his career until his death in November 2001. He was a celebrated artist in Singapore, remembered for his large-scale sculptures gracing many public spaces. Among Eng TengÕs slew of sculptures, one stands out; it is an homage to a great art legend, Frank Sullivan. SullivanÕs influential foothold in the art movement in Malaysia and Singapore inspired Eng Teng to create the ÔBust of Frank SullivanÕ in the 1970Õs. Eng TengÕs sculpture, ÔBust of Frank SullivanÕ which was previously in the private collection of an English estate in London, shows his meticulous FRANK SULLIVAN brilliance, capturing the essence and minutiae of SullivanÕs features perfectly, from his smile to the waves in his hair. It could also be assumed that both Sullivan and Eng Teng had crossed paths during SullivanÕs active advocacy of the local art scene in Malaysia and Singapore that led him to pay a tribute to this great man. ABOUT FRANK SULLIVAN Frank Sullivan was one of MalaysiaÕs pioneer in the Malaysian art movement. His contribution to the Malaysian and Singapore landscape is very well published in numerous art books in both countries. Sullivan was the Australian Press Secretary to the first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. Sullivan had a close, lifelong association with Malaysia that began during the Pacific War. In 1946, he purchased his first painting in Singapore and became so engrossed with the art of Malaya that, in 1952, he co-founded the Malayan Arts Council (MAC). At the brink of independence, in 1956, the MAC successfully broached the idea of a National Art Gallery with Tunku Abdul Rahman. With TunkuÕs support, the gallery was institutionalised in 1958, at his residence where it remained until moving to its current location in 1984. Sullivan was diligent in the materialisation and promotion of the gallery. His position in the gallery was initially as a secretary of the first Working Committee and then as a member of the Board of Trustees, a position he held until 1971. Further promoting modern Malaysian artists, Sullivan opened the Samat Gallery, MalaysiaÕs first commercial gallery for contemporary art, in 1967. It is without a doubt that he played a pivotal and integral role in the Malaysian art scene, discovering talents such as Khalil Ibrahim who held his first exhibition at Samat Gallery. Frank SullivanÕs influential foothold in the art industry in Singapore and Malaysia probably inspired Eng Teng to create the ÔBust of Frank SullivanÕ.
