Chuah Siew Teng (b. Penang, 1944) Fishing Village, 2008

        Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

Imbued with sincerity, Siew Teng's distinctive style is shown through this picturesque composition of a fishing village illustrating traditional Malaysian life. Siew Teng animates the scene with a variety of brushstrokes to convey the textures of the fishing village. His works are intimate studies that capture the fleeting moments of everyday life and convey a strong sense of homeland. S. Teng, as he signs his works to distinguish from his more illustrious father's 'Teng' imprimatur, is very versatile in all types of painting media - drawing, watercolour, oil, acrylic and batik. His batik art is distinguished by the play of light, with positive-negative elements, and with a stained-glass effect. In 1992, his batik titled The Monkey was selected for the UNICEF Greeting Cards programme. In 1964, his painting, Joy Of Living, was awarded a Certificate of Merit in the national art competition, and in 1965, he won a prize with his painting, Outdoor, in the Malaysian artists competition. His solos were staged in four different continents - Lower Gallery, London, Britain (1967), World Art Associates, United States (1971), Argyle Art Centre, New South Wales, Australia (1972) and Kanda Gallery in Tokyo, Osaka and Okinawa in Japan (1975). That same year, in 1975, he was invited to hold demonstrations at the Fremantle Arts Centre in Australia.

Kuala Lumpur train station is one of the oldest iconic buildings to date. It is known for its colonial influence on the infrastructure. As represented by the artist using oil on canvas as medium it gives an impression of serenity as a tinge of blueish color scheme is suffused throughout. People are shown in the busy street life of Kuala Lumpur. Some are seen in a group, couple or some are seen alone. It is well composed from the artist's perspective of the building in terms of balance and rhythm. Chuah Siew Teng, the eldest scion from the House of Teng, that is batik-art founder and doyen Dato' Chuah Thean Teng, is well-rounded in Western aesthetics, Chinese art and above all, batik painting. Trained at the Ravensbourne College of Art (1965-1966) and the City and Arts Guild (1966-1969) in London, he had sound foundation. His prizes in the North Malaya Open and national art competitions in the early 1960s attested to his talent. In 1992, UNICEF used his image from his work entitled The Monkey for its greeting card. It was a symbolic tribute to S. Teng, as he is known, for he was born in 1944, the Chinese lunar Year of the Monkey. Despite being low-key in his early career, he had solo exhibitions in London (1969), United States (1971), Australia (1972) and Japan (1975).

Was the sage Chuang Tzu (Zhuangzi) dreaming of the butterfly, or vice versa. The Zen poser could be expressed if this was a batik (art) dreaming that it was a Chinese ink painting. Beautifully simulated as a shan-sui (mountain and water) vista, the Malaysian element is insinuated through decals of coconut trees and attap huts. The conventional cracked lines of the batik dovetail the hemp strokes in Chinese brush painting, while the image is a mixture of nuanced darkened colour splotches with the resonance of watercolours.Chuah Siew Teng, the eldest scion from the House of Teng, that is batik-art founder and doyen Dato Chuah Thean Teng, is well-rounded in Western aesthetics, Chinese art and above all, batik painting. Such a beautiful view is now unknown to many of the younger generation, as the area has been turned into a water-treatment plant. The garden was founded by Charles Curtis from a granite quarry in 1884, but has seen better days, what with Penang’s water needs coming mainly from Kedah now.S.Teng, as he signs his works to distinguish from his more illustrious father’s ‘Teng’ imprimatur, is very versatile in all types of painting media – drawing, watercolour, oil, acrylic and batik.
