Biography from Mark Ruschman: Lois Main Templeton was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and later lived in San Francisco in the 1970s, where she became immersed in the Bay Area jazz and art scene. In 1979, she relocated to Indianapolis with her husband Kenneth Stuart Templeton Jr. Templeton enrolled at HERRON SCHOOL OF ART and excelled as a student, graduating magna cum laude in 1981 at the age of 51. Not satisfied to retreat to the solitude of a home studio, Templeton searched out a downtown warehouse building for studio space—the Faris Building. As others followed her lead, she became a driving force behind the revitalization of the downtown Indy arts scene. Best-known for her large, colorful, and painterly abstract paintings, Templeton was also a writer of poetry and journals. As her work evolved, her signature style combined vigorous mark-making with excerpts from her writings. She meticulously recorded activities, exhibits, and personal correspondences in sketchbooks daily for decades. She was fully immersed in her community and passionate about social issues, particularly childhood literacy. Templeton was a founding member of Very Special Arts (VSA) Indiana (later ArtMix), an organization that creates learning opportunities through the arts for individuals with disabilities. Over her lifetime, she engaged people at all levels—she opened her studio to K-12 students, served as an art instructor for college-aged students, and taught art to prison inmates. Among her many honors she received: the Herron School of Art and Design Distinguished Alumni of the Year in 2013, the NUVO Cultural Vision Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, a 2001 Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship from the ARTS COUNCIL OF INDIANAPOLIS, an Artists Project Award from the INDIANA ARTS COMMISSION in 2000, and she was selected to create the 1997 Indiana Governor's Arts Award. Provenance: From a private collector, Indianapolis. From the artist's own website: Born in 1928, mine was a Wisconsin childhood, rich in a countryside whose marshes and pastures still occasionally crop up in my work. Painting only arrived in the 1970's when, living near San Francisco, the materials themselves called out and my fingers itched to get hold of them. The high horizons and rimrock typical of the West can still be the first thing to climb onto my canvases. During the 1970's, the Bay Area was awake and erupting with an energy that entered my work and has never left. With it came jazz and soul, especially Soul. Back in the Midwest, now in Indianapolis, I graduated from Herron School of Art in 1981, taught a bit at Herron, then moved on into exploring the many new approaches to teaching open to Master Artists with VSA International. This is an exciting organization, with which I continue to work. Phil O'Malley, my studio partner and fellow artist, is a writer as well as a painter, so we couldn't help but collaborate on writing and publishing a children's picture book, Who Makes the Sun Rise?. The book then had to be shared with kids, of course, and led right into an art and literacy program, known as "Something to Crow About." Both the book and the program now have a life of their own. While as a family we zigzagged across the country, the State of Maine, especially the cottage on Frenchman Bay which my grandfather found in 1919, has been a continuing home. Although "the Warehouse" in Indianapolis remains the primary studio, I camp out here in Maine in a smaller, very handy space where the fingers still itch to get hold of the materials.
