First Nations 'Controller of the Weather' by Ron Telek

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Ron Telek (First Nations, Nisga'a Laxsgiik, 1962 to 2017) "Controller of the Weather," cedar wood carving, ca. 2006 CE. An amazing frontlet / mask sculpture with nacre shells and cedar bark tassels. Above the main face is a headdress that has open mouthed heads, and the verso has another face tucked into the panel. The open mouths symbolize the release of wind gusts that blow storms and clouds. The face is removable from the wood peg, and the chin underside is signed "TELEK." Ron Telek is known for his metaphysical themes rooted in the shamanistic elements of his cultural traditions, often depicting spirit-helpers, dualistic visions of good and evil, and the transformative nature of shapeshifting. Size: 6.75" L x 4.5" W x 11.5" H (17.1 cm x 11.4 cm x 29.2 cm) Ron Joseph Telek was a First Nations sculptor of the Nisga'a nation in British Columbia, born into a family of artists, including his uncles Alver Tait and Norman Tait, also skilled carvers, and Telek began carving under Norman Tait's guidance while in high school in Vancouver. Their collaboration resulted in the creation of totem poles, notably one in Stanley Park and two for Capilano Mall in North Vancouver during the 1980s. Following a transformative near-death experience in a car accident, Telek developed a distinctive style, drawing on traditional Northwest coast techniques and influences from his studies in anatomy and sculpting techniques at Langara College - using primarily wood and incorporating materials like bone, moose hair, and abalone. He has had a number of international gallery exhibitions, and a Telek sculpture is on display at the Museum of Northern BC. ?Parts from certain animal species, including abalone shell, may require an additional license upon import into another country due to legislation relating to endangered species and environmental conservation. If you are not sure whether CITES rules apply to your item, please see the CITES Appendices.
