Note: Early in his career, while studying in Paris, sculptor Rudolf Tegner was influenced by the Symbolists as well as the organic forms of l'Art Nouveau. He also drew inspiration from Classical art encountered on a trip to Greece and from the monumental sculpture of Michelangelo. The theatricality of his work caused controversy in the Danish art world throughout his career, and many of his large pieces met with resistance. In 1937 - 38 he designed and built The Tegner Museum, which includes a 34-acre sculpture park. Devoted to his sculptures and models in bronze, marble, clay and plaster, the museum is located 50 km north of Copenhagen and is open to the public.

He was honored at the Paris Exhibition of 1900 with a bronze metal. The current lot draws on his interest in classical mythology and demonstrates his masterly stylization of the human figure. The plaster version of this group was exhibited at the Paris Salon des Artistes Français in 1927, no. 3587. According to Greek mythology, Hercules was the hero who personified physical strength and courage. In this depiction of one of his twelve labors, he has triumphed over adversity with the slaying of the multi-headed water snake that ravaged the country of Lerna, near Argos.
