    WALTER DORWIN TEAGUE

    Est: CHF20,000 - CHF30,000

WALTER DORWIN TEAGUE (1883 – 1960) Metal, blue mirror glass, and wood. Inscribed on the front: Sparton Jackson Michigan, made in USA. Inscribed on the rear plaque: Sparton AC Receiver Model 1186. 110 × 39 × 117 cm. The Nocturne radio by Walter Dorwin Teague, one of the most influential US designers of consumer goods and industrial design, is one of the most important and remarkable icons of the "Machine Age" in the USA. Estimates suggest that only ca. 10-15 pieces of the mirrored device are still circulating on the art market worldwide (Cf. Wolfgang Hornik, Sparton Nocturne, see the article in: Style Deco). The geometric and classically balanced radio, which was distributed by the Sparton company founded in 1900, is one of the most modern expressions of American design of the 1930s. Both the design and the dimensions of this radio remind us that - before television - the radio was a societal way of receiving news and entertainment. Furthermore, the radio on offer, due to its price at the time, its shape and its futuristic design, should be considered not only as a utilitarian object, but also as a decorative work of art. Specimens of the Nocturne radio can be found in renowned museum collections: In 2009, the Design Museum Munich succeeded in acquiring a radio of this type (Inv. No. 1322). Other specimens can be found in the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Inv. No. 98.276.205), the Kirkland Museum of Decorative Arts (Inv. No. 2015.0872) or the High Museum of Art in Atlanta (Inv. No. 1998.35). Wolfgang Hornik, Sparton Nocturne, Artikel in: Style Deco). ---------------
