John Tayson (B. 1956) "White Pine Tree in Winter"

      Est: $250 - $500

John Tayson (CO, IL, B. 1956) "White Pine Tree in Winter" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Water Color Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. When the early European explorers first encountered the eastern coast of North America, they were greeted by a coastline thick with trees. The forest that extended from the sea to the edge of the Great Plains, from Newfoundland to the north coast of Georgia, contained over two hundred separate varieties of trees. But the most common -- and the undisputed King of the Forest -- was Pinus strobus, the Eastern White Pine. No single tree has served man better. The seamen of those early days used the tall, easily worked White Pine to replace the masts of their sailing ships -- and found that the new spars were stronger and more supple than the ones they replaced. White Pine cuts true and almost without knots. So, homes have used White Pine in their construction since colonial times, and continue to use it today. Also, man builds furniture, fencing -- even matches -- with White Pine. It has always been part of the bounty of this rich, giving land. But the White Pine is more than a source of building materials. It is a majestic sight, a tree of outstanding beauty. Its blue green needles dance in the wind, and purple cone flowers, tinged with the softest pink, add a splash of color to the forest. The White Pine's cones drop seeds to the forest floor in the autumn of their second year, and the cycle begins anew with broad stands of White Pine growing closely together to produce the classic Pine Forest. John Tayson (B. 1956) "John Paul Jones" W/C

      Est: $200 - $400

John Tayson (CO, IL, B. 1956) "John Paul Jones" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Watercolor Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. John Paul was born in Scotland in 1747. When he was twelve years old, he took service on a merchant ship which he left when it landed in Virginia. After a brief period studying navigation, he found a berth on a slaver and stayed with it until he was nineteen. He managed to get back to Virginia and added Jones to his name. With the outbreak of the Revolution, Jones was commissioned a lieutenant in the Continental Navy. Later, he was promoted to captain of a small fleet and in a cruise of his flagship, the Providence, captured sixteen enemy vessels. A grateful Congress appointed him captain of the sloop, Ranger. He proceeded to France and from there harried English merchant ships in the North Sea and the Irish Sea, and captured several British ships. Back in France, he was given command of the Bonhomme Richard, on which he conferred immortality. Jones was brought to battle by the British frigate Serapis, with eighteen guns as compared to the twelve of the Bonhomme Richard. Jones decided that his only hope was to close with the Serapis, which he succeeded in doing -- himself helping lash the two ships together. The ensuing battle was one of the most savage in Naval history; but ended with the surrender of the Serapis. On his return to Paris, Jones was a hero. John Adams called him "the ambitious and intriguing Officer in the American Navy." Image Size: 15.5 x 14.25 in. Overall Size: 26.25 x 22.25 in. Unframed. (B05607)

John Tayson (B. 1956) "Giant Sequoia Tree"

      Est: $350 - $700

John Tayson (CO, IL, B. 1956) "Giant Sequoia Tree" Signed lower left. Original Water Color painting on Water Color Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. If the tallest eastern oak rested atop the tallest sycamore, together their height would not equal that of one Giant Sequoia. The phenomenal dimensions of these Pacific coast trees are difficult to comprehend. Trees with a girth of eighty feet remain one of the great wonders of California. Besides being the tallest, these trees are thought to be over five thousand years old. Though there are relatively few Giant Sequoias, millions of their tiny seeds scatter each year. Like winged discs, no larger than a child's thumbnail, they spread over the forest floor. Few flourish and grow to seedling trees because so little sunshine can filter down through the Giant Sequoia forest. In fact, only in the Giant Sequoia's southern range do young trees thrive and perpetuate the species. There are only seventy-two groves of the Giant Sequoia left in America, with five to one thousand of these trees found in each grove. National Forests and Parks protect many, but not all, of these areas. Those not protected yield an enormous profit in the lumber business. Though the Giant Sequoia's value per board foot is not large, the sheer size and height of these trees give each acre of trees a high profit value. These giants of the forest provide lumber for fences, shingles, and general construction -- lumber needs which could be met by other trees that are not endangered like the Giant Sequoia. Though seldom cultivated, the Giant Sequoia has a future in parks where the space is available for the huge trees to thrive. Image Size: 18.5 x 17 in. Overall Size: 25 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B06361)
