Biography from Charleston Renaissance Gallery: Prentiss Taylor, printmaker, painter, and art therapist, was born in Washington D.C. in 1907. He studied at the Corcoran Gallery Art School and the Art Students League of New York. In 1931 he collaborated with author Langston Hughes in creating Golden Stair Press, printing and publishing broadsides and books. Taylor visited Charleston, South Carolina, from the end of May 1933 to Labor Day of that year, and when back in New York he created a number of lithographs based on his sketches and experiences in the South. Again he visited Charleston, arriving in February 1934 and staying for a short while, this time employed on the Public Works of Art Project in New York. Other visits to Charleston occurred in 1946 and several times thereafter. Taylor received fellowships at the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. From 1942 to 1976 he was the president of the Society of Washington Printmakers. Taylor practiced art therapy from 1943 to 1954 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington D.C. and he also wrote Art as Psychotherapy, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in February 1950. His work can be seen in many collections including the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among numerous others. His honors include the Cannon Graphic Prize from the National Academy of Design in 1954 and the Pennell Purchase award, 3rd prize class, from the Library of Congress in 1943. Taylor died in 1991 in Washington, D.C.

    Prentiss Taylor (American, 1907-1991)

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Prentiss Taylor (American, 1907-1991) , "Christ in Alabama", 1932, lithograph on paper, pencil-signed, titled, dated and inscribed "45 prints" lower margin, handwritten label inscribed "Property of George Houston Bass" on backing, 13 3/16 in. x 10 in., framed. Note: "Christ in Alabama" is one of four lithographs made in New York by Prentiss Taylor to illustrate three poems and a play by Langston Hughes for their book Scottsboro Limited. This book was sold to benefit the legal defense fund of the Scottsboro Boys, nine young Black men falsely accused of raping two white women on a train traveling from Chattanooga to Huntsville in 1931. The resulting legal cases are now considered egregious miscarriages of justice, spanning decades of appeals, yielding two landmark Supreme Court rulings and ending in 2013 with posthumous pardons for the remaining three of the Scottsboro Boys who were never pardoned nor had their convictions overturned. In the lithograph here entitled "Christ in Alabama", Taylor illustrates Hughes' poem of the same title. He uses compelling imagery including two black silhouette-like figures representing Christ and Mary. Stylized images of cotton to the right indicate the Southern locale. The emotional tone of the lithograph is, like the poem, elegiac in response to threatened death by lynching and rife with the turmoil surrounding the Scottsboro case. The handwritten label on the backing indicates that this print was likely in the collection of George Houston Bass, literary secretary to and the executor and trustee of Hughes’ literary estate.Ref.: Williams, Lynn Barstis.
