Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some into image; extensive creases in margins and image. Framed. A market scene populated by women in their ethnic finery in the shadow of the impressive gothic Town Hall in Middelburg. "Some of the finest advertising was produced by the LNER . . . in promoting their routes to the Continent. The LNER operated from several ports . . . but its main passenger service was from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, Flushing and Zeebrugge" (Railway p. 23). Taylor designed more than 60 posters between 1908 and the 1940s. His style, often very detailed, is here more representative (in the style of Tom Purvis) using broad, flat areas of color to create implied details. Furness Vol. 8, p. 72.

Condition A-: minor creases in margins and image; minor abrasions in image; slight time-staining at edges. Matted and framed. Taylor was a prolific artist who worked extensively for the British Railway companies, London Transport and the Empire Marketing Board. In all, he designed over 100 posters. This is the most stylized image in his extensive oeuvre and one of the very few (if not the only) poster he designed for an ocean liner company. The Avon was launched in 1907. Founded in 1839, the RMSP (Royal Mail Steam Packet) became the largest shipping group in the world in 1927 when they purchased the White Star Line. It was later dissolved on account of financial improprieties in 1931, and reestablished as the Royal Mail Line in 1932. Posters & Their Designers, p. 101.

ARTIST: FRED TAYLOR (1875-1963) SIZE: 49 1/2 x 39 1/2 in./125.7 x 100.3 cm PRINTER: Charley & Pickersgill, Leeds DESCRIPTION: This LNER destination poster captures the sumptuous sophistication of the Royal Hall located in the elegant spa town to the north of Leeds. The text here tells us to “Come for Health — Stay for Pleasure.” But the design, which seats us in the upper orchestra of the theatrical venue, is definitely showcasing the “pleasure” portion of Harrogate; the “health” aspect can be addressed later. Now if only these latecomers would sit down already so that the rest of us can enjoy the show! Known for his prolific works for railway and shipping clients, Taylor is also considered one of the principal, and finest, designers for the London Underground. Rare! (Art Nouveau; Travel; Railway)
