        Bayard Taylor w/c "Valley of Unna in Lew Chew": Framed watercolor and pencil by Bayard Taylor (1825-1879) the Chester County, Pennsylvania, author, traveler and artist. This drawing was the basis for "The Valley of Unna in Lew Chew", the frontispiece of his 1855 volume "A Visit to India, China and Japan in the Year 1853". This work was based on his travels in Asia, including accompying Admiral Perry into Japan in 1853 as the group's unofficial artist. It is an excellent landscape scene with traditional Japanese straw-roofed houses in the foreground and a moutain looming in the distance. Signed by the artist in pencil in he lower right, numbered 413, dated June 3. 1853. Captioned "Valley in Loo Choo Western Coast opposite Heady Barrow's Bay"; The location is present-day Okinawa, then the Kingdom of Ryukyu. Barrow's Bay is Kimbu Bay, which would make the mountain Mt Onna. Research notes by Robert A Goldstein on reverse, along with a xerox of the caption on the reverse of the sheet. Provenance: Robert A Goldstein;Barry S Slosberg Auctions, 25 October 2009; Paul D Rodebaugh. Size: sight is 11.875" X 8.75", frame is 17.5" X 15.5".CONDITION: Sheet is slightly toned all-over, apparently otherwise fine; not examinined out of frame, but reframed by the former owner.

        Bayard Taylor Watercolor of Cyprus : A framed watercolor by poet, artist and travel writer, Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) titled "The Isle of Cyprus", showing a view of a port city with mountains in the background, like copied from an engraving or a book illustration, as it is formatted as a period engraving would have been, with a broad margin at the bottom with the title. date and artist's name. Taylor has signed it as "J. B. Taylor Del". Date is July 1840, which would make Taylor 15 at the time of execution. Provenance: collection of Robert A Goldstein; Paul A Rodebaugh, who was an omnivorous collector of Bayard Taylor's work, in addition to being an historian of Chester County and the Society of Friends. Size: image is 7.125" X 4.5", frame is 12.25' X 10.25". CONDITION: Stain in lower margin, some scattered foxing; wear to gilt frame. Not examined out of frame.

James Cook''s A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean: On his third and final voyage, James Cook and his crew explored and charted the North American West Coast up to the Bering Strait. They then went south to Unalaska in the Aleutian Islands, where they stayed for three weeks among natives and Russian traders. Original brown pictorial wrappers printed in purple. Few parts cleanly detached from wrappers, light soiling to part 1, a little edge-chipping but generally clean and crisp. FINE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PARTS. "The most complete and elegantly Illustrated Work on Europe ever produced" (back wrapper advertisement). It was sold by subscription only at the cost of 50 cents per part.
