  • 1980s A. Taylor Painting "Mills Lake" (Rocky Mtn Park)
    Apr. 27, 2023

1980s A. Taylor Painting "Mills Lake" (Rocky Mtn Park)

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

**This item is heavy/oversized. Please inquire about shipping cost prior to bidding** **Originally Listed At $1500** Andy Taylor (American, b. 1949). "Mills Lake (Rocky Mountain National Park)" ca. 1983 to 1986. Signed on lower left. A monumental landscape painting by American artist Andy Taylor depicting Mills Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park that simultaneously evokes a sense of awe and the sublime as well as a moment of quiet stillness and tranquility - inviting the viewer to escape into nature. Particularly striking are the elegant lake reflections - dreamy inverted mirror images of the boulders and foliage across the glasslike surface of the lake waters. This relaxing view is delineated in a soothing palette of cool blues and greens as well as warm golds and earth tones in a hard edged style that some have compared to that of the legendary Georgia O'Keeffe. Mills Lake is a gorgeous subalpine lake below Half Mountain. From its eastern shore, one may take in breathtaking views of the Keyboard of the Winds, Pagoda Mountain, Chiefs Head Peak, and Thatchtop Mountain. Size: 44" L x 74" W (111.8 cm x 188 cm) Size of frame: 45.125" L x 75.4" W (114.6 cm x 191.5 cm) Mills Lake is named after Enos Mills, the "father of Rocky Mountain National Park". A naturalist pioneer of the region, Mills' contributions to the field led to the profession of interpretive park rangers. An avid mountaineer, Mills first ascended the park's highest peak at the age of 15 and would make that same hike 40 times solo and almost 300 times as a guide. Even more important were the many years he spent lecturing throughout the US, lobbying Congress, and writing countless articles and letters that contributed to the founding of Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915. Andy Taylor studied at Colorado College (BA cum laude, 1971) and he has lived in Carbondale, Colorado since 1975. He has had solo exhibitions at Ann Korologos Gallery, Basalt Gallery, and Western Colorado Center for the Arts, Grand Junction and more. His work has also been featured in the Coors Western Art Exhibition; the Biennial at the Loveland Museum; the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; Four Corners States Biennial; Roaring Fork Annual at Aspen Art Museum, and the list goes on. Andy Taylor's Artist Statement: "For almost forty years (now nearly 50 years) I have lived in Carbondale, Colorado. Most of my art world exists within a day's drive: the 250 miles to the north, south and west, across the Colorado Plateau, with its spectacular canyons, high plains, distant mesas, skinny rivers, and infrequent trees and sundry shrubbery. I love it: the colors, the shapes, the weather, and the occasional place where water changes everything. For me painting is about exploration and discovery: exploring different ways of seeing or different ways of expressing what I see and discovering what I want to paint and discovering things as I paint. And, if successful, the result is hopefully an engaging visual treat." Andy Taylor Painting - "Mills Lake" ca. 1980s

    Est: $2,600 - $3,900

Andy Taylor (American, b. 1949). "Mills Lake (Rocky Mountain National Park)" ca. 1983 to 1986. Signed on lower left. A monumental landscape painting by American artist Andy Taylor depicting Mills Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park in his signature gestural manner that simultaneously evokes a sense of awe and the sublime as well as a moment of quiet stillness and tranquility. And, if successful, the result is hopefully an engaging visual treat." Andy Taylor Painting - "Antelope House" ca. 1980s

    Est: $3,000 - $6,000

Andy Taylor (American, b. 1949). "Antelope House" oil on canvas, ca. 1983 to 1986, Signed on upper right. A monumental landscape painting by American artist Andy Taylor depicting an overlook of the ancient Anasazi ruins of Antelope House in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. Taylor captured the natural beauty of this mystical place with his signature gestural style and colorful palette of tangerine, fuchia, scarlet, spring green, turquoise, violet, lavender, magenta, salmon, and creamy white hues. Some have compared his hard-edged style to that of the legendary Georgia O'Keeffe. The Antelope House Ruin complex is comprised of two main building areas that border a central plaza. It was inhabited by the Kayenta Anasazi Indians from about 1050 to 1270 CE. Scholars believe that this complex once included more than 91 rooms and rose 4 stories high. Taylor's awe-inspiring birdseye view pays homage to the history held within the sandstone walls of Antelope House, an ancient treasure of the American Southwest. Size: 41.875" L x 66.125" W (106.4 cm x 168 cm) Size of frame: 42.875" L x 67.375" W (108.9 cm x 171.1 cm) Andy Taylor studied at Colorado College (BA cum laude, 1971) and he has lived and painted in Carbondale, Colorado since 1975.
