  • Jean Jacques Francois Taurel, A Harbour Scene with a Capriccio
    May. 17, 2014

Jean Jacques Francois Taurel, A Harbour Scene with a Capriccio

    Est: €17,000 - €18,000

Jean Jacques Francois Taurel, A Harbour Scene with a Capriccio Signed and dated lower left: f. tau(...) f. 182(.)J. J. F. Taurel is considered one of the most important exponents of the style of landscape and veduta painting propagated by Claude Joseph Vernet, and is most widely known for his depictions of naval battles and mediterranen harbours. He exhibited uninterrupted in the annual Paris Salon from 1787 to 1817, and painted a depiction of the French troops entering Naples for Napoleon in 1799 (kept in Versailles). The present work is not intended to show a topographically accurate representation of the harbour, but instead combines various ancient edifices to create a fantasy view with an ancient southern mood. We can see the Castel Sant'Angelo in the background, flanked to the left by the Arch of Constantine, and on the right edge of the painting, the staircase with the Dioskuri designed by Michaelangelo on Capitol has been combined with a reconstruction of the temple of Jupiter which was previously located there. 65 x 103 cm
