      May. 24, 2014

Gustav Taubert, Portrait of a Lady with a Wreath

      Est: €3,000 - €3,500

Gustav Taubert, Portrait of a Lady with a Wreath Signed and dated lower right: Gus. Taubert pinxit 1795Signed and dated lower right: Gus. Taubert pinxit 1795CertificateProf. H. Börsch-Supan, Berlin 31.8.2011The identity of the middle aged lady in this painting remains a mystery, but she was presumably a poet since she is depicted wearing a foliate wreath. A hand-written note attached to the reverse of the painting brings it into connection with the family of Baron von Krockow. However, according to Taubert's autobiography, the painter resided in Gdansk from July 1794 to September 1796 (F. Lacher op. cit.), so this dated sheet was presumably made there. With regard to Taubert's pastel paintings, Heinrich Brauner writes: "If Taubert really produced his best works in this medium, then it is all the more tragic that none of them have survived, either as originals or in photographs."This makes the present signed and dated pastel by this artist an even more valuable addition to his oeuvre, and to the culture of pastel use around 1800 in Berlin. All information taken from H. Börsch-Supan's certification from 2011. 29.5 x 22.5 cm
