Provenance: From the estate of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021) Born in 1732 in Churchill, Oxfordshire, Warren Hastings was a British colonial administrator who served as the first Governor-General of India from 1773 to 1785. Hastings began his career in the East India Company, serving as a clerk in the trading posts in India. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a member of the Bengal Council in 1761. As Governor-General, Hastings was responsible for consolidating British control over India and pursued a policy of territorial expansion, annexing large parts of India, including Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. On his return to England, he was accused of corruption and abuse of power during his time in office, and in 1787 he was impeached in the British Parliament for his alleged crimes in India. After a long trial, he was acquitted in 1795 and lived in retirement until his death in 1818 at the age of 85.
