    Western Europe, France, ca. 1714 CE. Nicolas Henri Tardieu (1674-1749) after Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), "Portrait of Nicolaus Le Camus". A copperplate engraved portrait of Camus, one of the most influential architects of the French Enlightenment. Camus is shown at a mature age, with a tremendous, flowing wig. Camus inspired Thomas Jefferson to ask for his design of the "glazed roof in the style of the Halle aux bles" to be incorporated in the U.S. Capitol Building. Size: 9.1" W x 13" H (23.1 cm x 33 cm) This is a rare and very well done engraving; the Philadelphia Museum of Art holds one (1985-52-32799), and WorldCat lists one in the Bibliotheque de France. Rigaud's paintings are notable for capturing very exact likenesses of their subjects, including costumes and background details; meanwhile, Tardieu was one of the finest engravers of his time. He focused mainly on landscapes, engraving less than a dozen of which two are considered important, both after Rigaud - one depicting d'Antin, and this one, depicting Le Camus. Provenance: Ex-Wm.     Einschiffung nach Cythera. Radierung nach Antoine Watteau. 55,4 x 74,4 cm. (1733). Le Blanc 83, Gramaccini/Meier (Die Kunst der Interpretation. Französische Reproduktionsgraphik 1648-1792, München/Berlin 2003) 74. Wz. Fragment. Die Radierung wiederholt Watteaus wohl bedeutendstes Gemälde "Die Einschiffung nach Cythera", das der Künstler 1717 nach wiederholter Ermahnung der Akademie als Aufnahmestück präsentiert hatte. Tardieu radierte die großartige Komposition auf Geheiß des Verlegers Jean de Jullienne, der das malerische und zeichnerische Werk Watteaus durch Nachstiche in vier Bänden herausgab. - Ausgezeichneter, präiser Druck mit schmalem Rand um die Plattenkante. Oben ein hinterlegter Randeinriss bis in die Darstellung, vertikale Mittelfalz, dort verso einige kleine Läsuren, alters- und gebrauchsspurig, im Gesamtiendruck jedoch gut. Selten.
