JOSÉ TAPIRÓ I BARÓ (Reus, Tarragona, 1836 - Tangier, Morocco, 1913). Untitled. Oil on canvas. It has slight restorations on the pictorial surface. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 34 x 24 cm. Painter great friend of Mariano Fortuny, his life and his work were intimately tied to those of this one; they were formed together in Reus, Barcelona, Madrid and Rome, and they shared his passion for Morocco and the orientalist subjects. Tapiró began his training at the Municipal School of Reus, where he met Fortuny and was a disciple of Doménech Soberano. In 1852 he moved to Barcelona, and entered the School of Fine Arts of La Lonja, where he studied with Vicente Rodés and Claudio Lorenzale. In 1856 he went to Madrid, where he was a disciple of Federico de Madrazo. There he also won a third medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1867, with a work that was bought by the Spanish State. In 1858 he moved with Fortuny to Rome, where he came into contact with the community of Spanish painters and attended courses in life drawing at the Academia Chigi. From there he made several trips to Morocco, accompanied in 1871 by Fortuny. After the death of Fortuny, with whom he shared a studio in Rome, Tapiró settled permanently in Tangier. He made sporadic visits to Paris, Reus and Barcelona, where he exhibited in the Parés room, and attended international exhibitions such as the Universal exhibitions of Paris and Chicago. He stood out as a great luminist, and acquired international renown as a watercolorist, being especially appreciated in England (he exhibited annually in London). He was also the founder and first president of the Center of Watercolorists of Barcelona. He obtained two silver medals in Paris (1889 and 1900), an honorary mention at the Barcelona Exposition of 1866 and a medal at the Universal Exposition of Chicago in 1893. Among the notables who acquired his works were the English royal family and the American millionaire Vanderbilt, as well as museums in Madrid, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, St. Petersburg, Haarlem, Montreal and Norwich. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Dahesh in New York and the Spanish consulate in Tangier, among others. It presents slight restorations on the pictorial surface.

JOSÉ TAPIRÓ - La fiesta de la Issawa

      Est: -

JOSÉ TAPIRÓ Reus, 1836-Tangier, 1913 “La fiesta de la Issawa. M. 1885” Watercolor on paper Signed Measurements 48.5 x 69.5 cm Origin: - Private collection, Reus. José Tapiró is considered one of the best watercolourists of his time, endowed with an extraordinary technique, meticulous and precious. He achieved international fame for his approach to the orientalist world. His training took place at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona under the mastery of Domènec Soberano and Claudio Lorenzale and then of Federico Madrazo in Madrid. In 1857 he went to Rome with his dearest friend Mariano Fortuny and two years later they visited Morocco for the first time. In 1862 he moved to Rome, which alternated with trips to Barcelona, Reus, Madrid, Granada, Tangier, Tetouan and Amalfi. In 1877, after the death of Fortuny, he settled down definitively in Tangier where he painted numerous watercolors which are a faithful testimony of the traditions and customs of that country. In 1889 he was awarded with a diploma of the Spanish Exhibition held in London and with the second medal in the Universal of Paris. In 1893 his was the only medal at the Universal Exhibition of Chicago and, in 1896, second medal of the Barcelona Exhibition. His work is present in important museums and international collections. This watercolor represents the annual entourage of the religious brotherhood of the Issawa at the moment the members of the brotherhood access the Medina of Tangier through the door of Bab Rabba and parade in procession to their zawiyah (monastery) next to the New Mosque . Tapiró describes with great precision the development of this unusual Moroccan ritual where music, mystical outbursts and exorcism broke through the central street of Shiaguin. Work exhibited in: - Josep Tapiró.
