Tao Tao Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1825 - d. 1900

Tao Tao was a native of Suzhou but was active in Shanghai with the majority of his dated works from the last decades of the nineteenth century. Originally inspired by Dong Qichang (1555-1636), his later landscapes are influenced by the Four Rens. For a biography see Steven Little, ed. New Songs on Ancient Tunes, Honolulu, 2007.

        "TAO TAO" ANCESTRAL FIGURE: TORAJAH, INDONESIA A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF THIS LARGE

        "Tao Tao" Ancestral Figure: Torajah, Indonesia A classic example of this large sculpture with articulated arms and legs, the arms jointed at the elbows. The head is also carved separately, with projection at bottom which fits into the top of the torso. Inlaid shell eyes. Although the figure displays overall wear and weathering commensurate with age, it is in very good condition. The head is particularly well carved and preserved. Two cloth panels, most probably originally used to wrap it in the shrine in which the figure stood, accompany the lot.
