America's first internationally renowned African-American artist, Henry Ossawa Tanner was born in Pittsburgh to a well-educated and devoutly religious family. When Henry was age 13, his father, the Reverend Benjamin Tucker Tanner, moved the family to Philadelphia. With the support of his parents and inspiration from the art of the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition, he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy to study with Thomas Eakins who became a close friend. Tanner briefly painted animals and was determined to become the "American Landseer" in response to the demand for animal portraits. Between 1886 and 1887 Tanner was an illustrator for Harper Brothers, a publishing firm willing to advance black artists and writers. He then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he briefly and unsuccessfully ran a photography studio, but by 1891 he turned back to painting and sailed for France.

With the artist's estate ink stamp, signed and initialed by the artist's son Jesse O. Tanner in ink and numbered 26 in crayon on the verso. With pencil sketches of a woman's profile, figures and other notations in graphite on the verso. Also estate and ink stamped 26, and signed and initialed in ink by Jesse Tanner on the backing paper. Provenance: the estate of the artist; Marcia M. Mathews, thence by descent, private collection. Art historian Marcia M. Mathews (1904 - 1990) wrote the first and seminal biography of the artist Henry O. Tanner, American Artist in 1969. Her research for the project included extensive correspondence with the artist's son Jesse O. Tanner and studying the family records in France. This richly impastoed oil study is an excellent example of Tanner's many nocturnal scenes of Biblical subjects. Tanner united an experimentation of material with the murkiness and intimacy of his moonlit scenes. It is a very similar to and a possible study for Tanner's Flight Into Egypt., 1923, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The one notable difference in the composition is in this smaller painting the figures are turned, with their backs to the viewer. This tonal study is typical of his later nocturnal scenes with broad painterly passages, densely layered surfaces and glazes of cerulean and cobalt blue. This study is one of Tanner's later interpretations of his important series of paintings depicting the Holy Family's flight into Egypt. As early as 1898-99, the time of Tanner's second trip to the Holy Land, in 1898-99, Tanner began painting his intepretation of the Biblical story. It soon became a favorite subject of the artist - a depiction of the Mary, Jesus and Joseph escaping on a donkey under the cover of night. According to Dewey Mosby, Tanner had already painted four or five different versions by 1909. Today there are recorded at least fifteen versions dated between 1899 and 1932; including works in the Detroit Institute of Arts (1899), the Cincinnati Art Museum (c. 1907), the National Museum of African-American History and Culture (1916), the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (1921) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1923). Flight into Egypt was also a popular subject for Tanner with American collectors. Tanner's depiction of the Holy Family's clandestine escape (Matthew 2:12–14) reflects the narrative of escaping persecution found in the history of many enslaved African Americans and their pursuit of freedom. A year later, he began life drawing classes under the tutelage of Thomas Eakins. After an interest in maritime painting, Tanner settled on painting animal subjects, with his stated desire "to become an American Landseer." According to Anna O. Marley, "Tanner was so devoted to animal painting that he bought a sheep to serve as a model for his pastoral compositions." This small study has clear ties in subject to Tanner's 1881 Boy and Sheep Under a Tree, but its bold passages of painterly brushwork are closer to his naturalist study of lions, Pomp at the Zoo, circa 1880, and Lion Licking its Paw, 1886. Benjamin Tucker Tanner, Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, was born in Pittsburgh and raised in Philadelphia. In 1872 Tanner decided to become an artist, and in 1880 he was accepted at the Pennsylvania Acadamy of Fine Arts. He was a student of Thomas Eakins, and the two artists established a close relationship. As an African-American artist, Tanner found it difficult to establish patronage in Philadelphia or in Atlanta, where he initially opened a photography studio. A photograph of the painting is the Henry Ossawa Tanner papers, the Archive of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, stamped "Frederick O. Bemm, Photographer Art Institute Chicago" and inscribed "'Morocco' by Henry O. Tanner, Paris" and "In private collection. Chicago" in ink, verso. Exhibited: Exhibition of Paintings by Henry O. Tanner, Thurber Art Galleries, Chicago, February 1913. This was Tanner's second solo exhibition at the Thurber Galleries. In 1913, after Chicago, the exhibition traveled to the Milwaukee Art Gallery, March 6-16 and the John Herron Art Institute, Indianapolis, March 21-31 and finally M. Knoedler Galleries, New York in April. We believe this painting is Moonrise by Kasbah due to its particular view of the outside walls, architecture unlike Tanner's identifiable Tangier subjects, and that by the time of the New York exhibition, Moonrise by Kasbah was no longer on the checklist. Tanner travelled to Tangier and other cities in Morocco in 1912. This painting shows figures outside the stark, steep exterior walls of a Moroccan kasbah. The Thurber checklist includes seven titles of the eleven Morrocan paintings that suggest nocturnes or moonlit subjects. From that list, we have located the following four paintings: Moonlight - Old Buildings (near Ka-hak), collection of Lewis Tanner Moore, Moonrise- Walls of Tangier, collection of LACMA, Los Angeles, Moonlight - Hebron, collection of the Milwaukee Art Museum and Moonrise - (Walls of) Tangier, collection of Hamilton College, Clinton, NY.

Tanner 12 x 9.5 inches Henry Ossawa Tanner was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1859 to a prominent middle class family. His father was a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and despite his initial misgivings, he supported his son’s education at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Tanner found an early mentor in Thomas Eakins, whose influence is seen in Tanner’s work throughout his career. Upon graduation, Tanner eked out a living by opening a photography studio and teaching at Clark College. In 1891, Tanner left to study and teach in Paris. He attended Academie Julian and studied under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. It was here that he was able to develop his personal style, free from the prejudice found in the United States. Early in his career, he painted genre scenes of African American life which portrayed the dignity of his subjects despite poverty and prejudice. One of his most famous paintings from this period, The Banjo Lesson, demonstrated this intention of breaking the stereotypical caricature mold with its depiction of an older African American male teaching a young boy how to play the banjo, an instrument that had become an object of derision. Despite the rise of modernism, he remained painting in a firmly academic manner and focused entirely on religious subjects for the rest of his career. A trip to North Africa and the Holy Land later in his career brought about a mystical quality in his work that furthered his personal style while remaining true to his unwavering academicism. His paintings were shown regularly in the salons in Paris - his painting Resurrection of Lazarus won the Third Class Medal at the Salons des Artistes, Francais, 1897- as well as stateside. Tanner became the mentor for early 20th century African American artists who made pilgrimages to France to study and paint. In 1927, he was inducted into the National Academy of Design. His work has been shown in exhibitions at the Philadelphia Art Club; New York Public Library; Vose Galleries, Boston, MA; National Arts Clubs Galleries, NY; Corcoran Gallery Biennial; Century of Progress, Chicago; Philadelphia Art Alliance; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1969, a traveling retrospective of over 80 of Tanner’s paintings, drawings, and studies was held by the Frederick Douglass Institute and the National Collection of Fine Arts, Washington D.C. His work is found in the collections of Atlanta High Museum of Art, GA; Art Institute of Chicago; Carnegie Collection; Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum; and the White House Collection. Dewey F. Mosby, director emeritus of Colgate’s Picker Art Gallery and author of Henry Ossawa Tanner (1839-1937), wrote this concerning Virgin Mary in Meditation : “the handling, with its vertical brushstrokes and touches of impasto highlights calls to mind Christ at the Home of Martha and Mary especially in the table cloth and background. The treatment of (Virgin) Mary in Meditation calls to mind the earlier Thankful Poor….the pious attitude here is not too far removed from..The Savior. The subtle halo above the head of the pious woman , who seems to be in meditation, suggests the figure is the Virgin Mary. This notion is not mere speculation. We know that beginning around 1900, and continuing until his last works in the 1930s, Tanner painted and drew numerous images of the Virgin Mary.” Mosby suggests that the possible model for the picture is Mrs. Atherton Curtis, which seems likely. Atherton and Louise Curtis were friends and patrons, and Tanner and his wife, Jessie, had spent the autumn of 1902 with the Curtises in Mount Kisco, NY. Tanner painted Portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Atherton Curtis with Still Life (n.d.) which is in the collection of the Smithsonian. It was not unusual for Tanner to appropriate his acquaintances as models—this composition is later seen in a sketch for Christ at the Home of Lazarus (collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art).

Tanner was was born in Pittsburgh, PA where his mother, a former slave, was sent from the south through the Underground Railroad. Sarah Miller married Benjamin Tucker Tanner, a college-educated teacher and minister who later became a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopalian Church. In 1864, the Tanner family settled in Philadelphia where Henry's early artistic talents were recognized and developed. After a period of illness, Tanner enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at age twenty-one. There he was greatly influenced by Thomas Eakins who was his teacher and mentor. Tanner tried his hand at several business ventures in the arts but when none were successful he set sail for Europe in 1891. Intending to settle in Rome, Tanner fell in love with Paris and there he studied at the Academie Julien, soon painting two of his most important works depicting Africa-American subjects, The Banjo Lesson , from 1893 and The Thankful Poor in 1894. In 1895, Tanner focused his attention on religious subjects and it is with those paintings that he made his reputation and gained international acclaim. Sales of his paintings of Biblical subjects financed trips to Palestine, Egypt and Morocco. The subject here is Cairo, painted in 1897 during a trip to Egypt.
