    ANN TANKSLEY (1934 - ) Untitled (Formal Dance). Oil and graphite on cotton canvas, 1974. 457x610 mm; 18x24 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower left. Provenance: private collection, New York. Exhibited: Acts of Art, New York, with the ink stamp on the upper stretcher bar verso. Born in Pittsburgh, Tanksley graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), Pittsburgh with a BFA in 1956. Tanksley then moved to New York where she studied at the Art Students League, the New School for Social Research, the Paulette Singer Workshop and the Printmaking Workshop. In the 1970s, Tanksley was an inaugural member of Where We At: Black Women Artists, the New York based women's art collective, founded by Kay Brown, Dindga McCannon and Faith Ringgold. One of Tanksley's earliest group exhibitions was the collective's 1972 Cookin' and Smokin' exhibition at the Weusi-Nyumba Ya Sanaa Gallery in Harlem. She then had solo exhibitions at Acts of Art gallery in 1973 and 1974. One of her most celebrated works is Images of Zora, a large group of 60 monoprints inspired by the writings of Zora Neal Hurston which she exhibited in 1991. She has received several corporate commissions from the Coors Brewing Company, Pepsi Cola Company, Absolut Vodka, and Colgate-Palmolive. Her work can be found in the collections of the Studio Museum in Harlem, the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Hewitt/Bank of America Collection.

    Ann Tanksley b. 1934 Untitled Oil on canvas 1972 Signed and dated. Born Ann Graves in the Homewood community of Pittsburgh, Ann became interested in art at an early age. She graduated from South Hills High School in 1952 and went on to study at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) and earn a BFA. She married fellow Homewood native, John Tanksley and they moved to Brooklyn, NY. Tanksley began raising her family before returning to study at the Art Students League, the New School for Social Research (Greenwich Village), and also at Bob Blackburn’s Printmaking Workshop. Tanksley was an early member of Where We At: Black Women Artists, Inc., a women’s art collective based in New York. She exhibited at the 1972 show, Cookin' and Smokin', at the Weusi-Nyumba Ya Sanaa Gallery in Harlem. “She uses a glazing technique incorporated with charcoal lines, which enhances a sense of spontaneity and humor.” (Gumbo Ya Ya: Anthology of Contemporary African-American Women Artists, KingHammond, 1995) Her work is included in the collections of the Johnson Publishing Company (dispersed), Studio Museum in Harlem, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Hewitt Collection, among others. 11 x 14 inches

One of her major accomplishments was the creation and publication of a masterful portfolio of monoprints based on the writings of Zora Neale Hurston entitled, Images of Zora. Described by the writer Maya Angelou as “dazzling”, the prints were unveiled at two New York exhibitions and went on a national tour. Tanksley has received numerous commissions including Coors Brewing Company, Pepsi Cola Company, Absolut Vodka and Colgate-Palmolive. Her work is in several permanent collections including the Johnson Publishing Company and the Studio Museum in Harlem. She is also in prominent private collections including the Hewitt Collection and Oprah Winfreys.

Provenance: the Johnson Publishing Company, Inc., Chicago. Ann Tanksley, born in Pittsburgh and now a resident of New York, is a figurative painter and printmaker. A graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh, Tanksley also studied at the Art Students League, the New School for Social Research and the Printmaking Workshop where she learned monotype. One of her most celebrated works is Images of Zora, a large group of 60 monoprints inspired by the writings of Zora Neal Hurston which she exhibited in 1991. She has received several corporate commissions from the Coors Brewing Company, Pepsi Cola Company, Absolut Vodka, and Colgate-Palmolive. Her work can be found in the collections of the Studio Museum in Harlem, the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Hewitt/Bank of America Collection.
