        Maria Taniguchi (b. 1981) Yes 2012 acr ylic on canvas 90” x 45” (229 cm x 114 cm) Provenance: Sliverlens Gallery, Makati City Maria Taniguchi’s monumental brick painting titled Yes is part of her ongoing series of paintings Taniguchi started in 2008. The piece consists of numerous rectangular cells outlined by thin and gossamer-like lines, giving it the appearance and visual presence of actual bricks. Each seemingly miniscule element was painstakingly and succinctly hand-drawn by Taniguchi herself, reflecting her exemplary craftsmanship and technique. As a cohesive whole, the piece exudes a monumental sense of bravura—allowing the viewer to experience it in the same way one experiences a magnificent work or architecture. When viewed in its entirety, Taniguchi’s black squares seemingly melt together into an alluring black mass—an effect akin to Kazimir Malevich’s Black Squares. Its seemingly infinitesimal sparseness effectively communicates a sense of introspection and spatial awareness; allowing one to reflect existence against a backdrop of pure presence. Taniguchi’s piece’s ability to appear both finely detailed and infinitely sparse showcases the artist’s technical and conceptual skill. Taniguchi earned her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines Diliman, and her MFA from Goldsmiths London. She has since mounted numerous exhibitions both here and abroad, such as Roving Eye at Sorlandets Kunstmuseum in Norway, +Pyramid at Green Papaya Art Projects in Manila, and JUMP CUT Dialectic Dream at The Barber Shop in Lisbon.

        Maria Taniguchi (b.1981) Untitled "These paintings take time and help me regulate my own production, my thinking," says Maria Taniguchi of her brick paintings which she has been working on since 2008. Each grid of brick is drawn in pencil on a black ground, sharply outlined and filled in with black acrylic wash. Biography: Maria Taniguchi (b. 1981, Dumaguete City, Philippines) lives and works in Manila, Philippines. After pursuing a BFA in Sculpture at the University of the Philippines, she completed an MFA in Art Practice at Goldsmiths in London in 2009. In the same year, she joined the LUX Associates Artists Program, a post-academic program based in London for artists working with the moving image. She received the Ateneo Art Award for her solo exhibition Echo Studies at the Jorge Vargas Museum and Untitled (Celestial Motors) shown at Silverlens, Manila in 2011 and 2012, respectively. In 2015, she was the recipient of the HUGO BOSS ASIA ART Award presented in Shanghai, China. Taniguchi was selected for Art Statements in 2013, a section of solo presentations by emerging artists at Art Basel 44. Selected recent projects were exhibited in Qiao Space, Shanghai, China (2018); Edouard Malingue Gallery, Hong Kong (2017); Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (2017); Ibid Gallery, London (2015); HIWAR: Conversations in Amman (2013), a residency and exhibition program curated by Adriano Pedrosa at the Khalid Shoman Foundation in Amman; and Without a Murmur (2012), a group exhibition curated by Joselina Cruz at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) in Manila; and The Philippine Contemporary: To Scale the Past and the Possible, an exhibition curated by Patrick D. Flores at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila (2015). She participated in several international art fairs such as Art Basel, Hong Kong (2018); ART DÜSSELDORF, Germany (2017); Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair (2017); Frieze London (2017); Sydney Contemporary (2017). Some of her work figure in the public collections of Singapore Art Museum, M+ Museum in Hong Kong, The Burger Collection in Hong Kong, K11 Art Foundation in Shanghai, Sifang Art Museum in Nanjing, China, Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, and the Kadist Art Foundation in San Francisco and Paris. 2014 acrylic on paper+H200 46" x 33" (114 cm x 84 cm)
