      KANO TANGEN (JAPAN, 1679-1767) CHINESE EXPLORATION HANDSCROLL, C. 1719, L 23' 4"An early 18th century Japanese scroll by Kano Tangen. Depicting Tangen's secret trip through the Xin River and Jiangxi Province of China. Depicting eight aerial view of lakes and rivers with corresponding texts to the upper side edges. Previously acquired at Christie's (NY) from what is estimated to originally belong to Prince Shimazu of Satsuma, Kyushu, Japan (1886-1968); first auctioned in 1923. From the estate of Gerald Torrence, Chicago.
