Condition A-: minor tears and creases at edges; minor scuff in central image. Paper. With a traditional artistic background in textile design, Tanaka ultimately switched to graphic design. From book to logo design, interior decoration, typography and exhibition design, he practiced every aspect of the field with a refined style. For years, he also worked for the Seibu group, for whom he supervised their global image. A lover of traditional Japan, his posters celebrated the arts and crafts of his native country in a superb, modern way. For the Nihon Buyo (Japanese dance) performance at UCLA, Tanaka depicts a dancer's face, as if composed of origami. This is the first time he used this emblematic form, and he went on to employ it frequently in different variations for other posters he designed for cultural events and exhibitions.

Artist: IKKO TANAKA (1930-2002) Size: 28 3/4 x 40 5/8 in./73 x 103 cm Dai Nippon Printing, Japan One of Japan's best-known illustrators, Ikko Tanaka created a style of graphic design that fused European Modernism with Japanese traditions by focusing on their shared desire for visual simplicity. In 1963 he formed the Tanaka Design Studio, where he worked for Mazda and Issey Miyake, among others. This radiant travel poster for his home country is a perfect synthesis of traditional Japanese simplicity and grace, together with modern Japan's pop cuteness. It's a Sika deer – one of the few deer species that doesn't lose its spots in adulthood. They congregate at Nara Park, where for centuries they were considered sacred, and their slaughter punishable by execution. Now they eat their fill of shika-senbei, or 'deer-crackers,' which you can buy for them at Nara Park. (Travel, nature)
