        Nov. 03, 2019

Eston Tan (b. 1972) Do You Hear ME!, 2013-2015

        Est: RM16,000 - RM28,000

Eston Tan finds inspiration in the life force and energy of cities around the world. This artwork shows the fraternity among a group of men gathering and conversing in the evening. They were wearing the yellow shirts, participating in the Bersih movement, which was a crucial demonstration instrumental in the changing of government administration in the later years (May 2018). The demonstration hoped that the government would listen to the voices of the citizens. The scene is illuminated by the food stall, creating a warm glimmering light surrounding the figures. Using sumptuous textures, the artist captures the light dark effects of the night and conveys the atmosphere of local lives. Eston Tan received his art education from the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur (1991) and The One Academy, Kuala Lumpur (1992–1993). He was the recipient of the Minor Award, Penang Young Talent in 1999 and Major Award, Penang Young Talent the following year. Besides Malaysia, he has held solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Austria and Taiwan. He has participated in group shows namely Mail Art in New York, Art from Malaysia, Vienna, International Art Symposium, Hungary and Korean International Invitation Exhibition in Seoul etc. He is a member of the Penang Watercolour Society and New Expression of Asian Art.

        Nov. 12, 2017

ESTON TAN (b. 1972) THE PRAYERS, 2004, Oil on jute

        Est: RM1,500 - RM2,500

This 2004 painting of the 289-year-old Guan Im Teng Temple (Goddess of Mercy Temple) in Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (Pitt Street) in Penang is telling for the ‘busy-ness’ in the front courtyard complete with feeding pigeons, and with a large wheel-based incense urn on the left. The courtyard is less cluttered now after major renovations which included repairs to the intricate roof tiles chien nien (broken pottery) ornamentation. Devotees are no longer allowed to take joss-sticks into the interiors, probably as a fire safety precaution. For Eston Tan, a Penang boy, his rendition of the temple with the palette knife is unusually rough-textured and crustily pigmented. Many do not know, however, that the original sitting pantheon of the temple was Mazu (Mah Chor Poh), the patron saint of the seafarers, but it was changed to Guan Im (Avalokitesvara) after the 1824 renovations, with several other deities added.Eston Tan, now based in Taiwan because of the better art market and the more sophisticated scene, had his art tutelage at the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur, graduating with a diploma in 1991, and a stint from 1992-1993 at the One Academy, Petaling Jaya. He had a brief teaching stint before deciding to go full-time into art in 2000, and held his first of five solos, called Thoughts On Life, at the NN Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2004 – until 2012. Though raised with five other siblings by a single mother, he had been painting since the age of 10 and showed early promise when he won the Minor Award in the Penang Young Talent competition in 1999, and clinching the Major Award the next year. His first overseas solo called City of Lights was held at the Affinity for Art in Hong Kong in 2014. A vastly improved and serious artist, Eston Tan saw an oil on jute sold for the highest premium of RM45,089 at the Christie’s Asian Contemporary Art auction in Hong Kong in November 2013.

ESTON TAN (b. 1972) FACETS OF LIFE II, 2010, Oil on linen

        Est: RM6,000 - RM10,000

The French flavour, or the Fauvist strokes were not so evident in this 1976 Sultan Abdul Samad Building oil painting. The Indo-Saracenic or Neo-Mughal style of the building contrasts sharply with the towering skyscrapers that sprouted in the vicinity. If anything, the painting veered more towards the Nanyang Style with a locale of colours, taste and ambience. If prodded why not so, Tew Nai Tong would say: “We study French techniques, but not their style.”After graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore in 1958, Nai Tong furthered his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, returning in 1968. He started teaching at the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1969-80, the Central Academy of Art in 1982-85, and then the Saito Academy of Art in 1986-88 before deciding to become a fulltime artist in 1992. His first solo was at the British Council in 1964 and he was being accorded a mini-retrospective by the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2007.Nai Tong won 2nd Prize in the Standard Chartered Bank Mural Design Competition (1964), the Shell Watercolour Award (1981), Best Award in Esso (1980), the Dunlop WatercolourAward (1983), Grand Prize Asia Art Award (Malaysia) in Seoul in 2009. He was co-founder of Malaysian Watercolour Society and the Contemporary Malaysian Watercolorist Association and Le Beaux Art Gallery.

ESTON TAN b. Penang, 1972 A NIGHT FOR YOU, 2011 Signed and dated 'Eston Tan 2011' (lower right) Oil on jute 125cm x 95cm A Night for You is one of twenty night cityscapes viewed through bird's-eye perspective exclusively painted for Eston Tan's solo exhibition held in Kuala Lumpur and Penang in 2011 and 2012. Inspired by city lights that illuminate the night, the body of work is illustrated fervently in a technique developed by the artist using thick layers of dark impasto followed by lines, drips and dots of bright palette to indicate the bustling atmosphere of a city that never sleeps. The artist also shares his concern for the environment by naming his exhibition 26° after a global cause, The 26 Degrees Campaign that promotes energy saving by creating awareness that all air-condition units should be set at the temperature of 26 degree Celsius. Eston Tan received his art education from the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur (1991) and The One Academy, Kuala Lumpur (1992 - 1993).
