TAN CHOON GHEE : Penang Scene, 1982

          Est: RM5,000 - RM8,000

Tan Choon Ghee was a master in capturing buildings, shops, landscapes and tiny, miniscule details. By infusing the Chinese classical paintings’ calligraphic brushstrokes and the British watercolour approach, Tan Choon Ghee created pieces that are ethereal, desirable and unmitigated in its exquisiteness. With gentle brushstrokes and the way the ink blends into the white background gives it that faint, misty glow that provides his pieces with an air of nostalgia. Tan Choon Ghee was considered one of the most established Malaysian artists.

The festive air is obvious from the jostling crowd outside the Penang Kwan Im Teng (Goddess of Mercy Temple) with the ‘action’ taken at the inverted ‘V’ junction of Stewart Lane and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, with devotees buying prayer paraphernalia from the side stalls. The temple is the oldest temple in Penang, being built in 1728 – only the Cheng Hoon Teng in Malacca is older (built: 1645). The unusually larger crowd could only stem from a festive occasion, like one of the three birthdays of the temple’s guardian deity, Kuan Im, which falls on the 19th day of the 2nd, 6th and 9th Chinese lunar months. Or more unlikely, the Jade Emperor’s Birthday, which falls on the 9th day of the Chinese lunar new year, as there would hardly be space to swing a cat. This was a time when devotees could still take joss-sticks into the premises, as now devotees have to pray and leave the jossticks or paper in the front compound, after completion of renovations a few years ago. But here you get the classic Tan Choon Ghee watercolour touches of draughtsmanship and the gentle fall of shadows, with the negative space of the trishaw peddlers waiting on the lower left. And this, from his more sought-after mid-1980s period.

          Est: RM5,000 - RM9,000

Watercolourist, Tan Choon Ghee, captures in his spectacular fashion, the atmosphere and the goings on of the bustling streets of London in 1981. He captures the buildings, the shops, landscapes and tiny, miniscule details. By infusing the Chinese classical paintingsÕ calligraphic brushstrokes and the British watercolour approach, Tan Choon Ghee creates pieces that are ethereal, desirable and unmitigated in its exquisiteness. With gentle brushstrokes and the way, the ink blends into the white background gives it that faint, misty glow that provides his pieces with an air of nostalgia.

We see members of the community gathering after a long day, some resting, some chitchatting.Choon Ghee was trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore, graduating in 1951, and continued his studies at the Slade School of Art in London, graduating in 1969. After receiving a German Government painting scholarship and an Australian Government TV set design scholarship, he worked for TV Singapore and TV Broadcasting Ltd in Hong Kong. But he gave up a cushy job to go full time into painting at the end of 1967, and never looked back.
