Original Vintage Aperitif Poster Demandez un Marra by Tamagno Belle Epoque

Illustrated by Francisco Tamagno in 1903, the Demandez un Marra poster advertises the French liqueur brand Quina Marra. Quina, oftentimes referred to as Quinquina is a term for alcoholic drinks that contain quinine. The poster features a well-dressed couple in the center of the image with the woman pouring the Quina Marra into the man's glass. The text on the bottom poster reads "I drink my Marra to stay beautiful and I drink it for my Health as well". The elegant costuming of the couple implies the higher-class audience which the brand is catering to. Francisco Tamagno (1851 -?) was of Portuguese origin, starting his artistic career as a portrait painter. Tamagno moved to Paris sometime in the 1880's and became the house artist of the Printer Camis, where he started off creating theatrical playbills and moved up to creating posters for railroads, bicycles makers and distillers. Tamagno's style is highly pictorial and his work can be identified through the use of lively, bright colors. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is linen backed. The overall condition of the poster is very good with a general diminished depth of color which is consistent overall. Our current price reflects the condition. Condition B+: time-staining in margins; minor repaired tears, creases and minor abrasions in margin and along unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds. An Italian artist who trained in Rome, Tamagno was most prolific during his long career in Paris, working with Victor Camis, the poster printer. He produced over 100 poster commissions in the last decade of the 19th century, before switching to the Gallice printing press in 1905. In all of them a young lady makes it to the top of a hill way ahead of the competition, effortlessly outdistances an airplane, beats a locomotive coming on at full speed, and, as seen here, keeps pace with a male companion atop a Terrot motorbike—although she appears to have taken some sort of shortcut through the underbrush. Her gentleman friend is the picture of good sportsmanship as he outpaces the other riders, but this feisty female—as is always the case in a Tamagno Terrot poster—doesn’t neglect to let the competition know in no uncertain terms who’s the champ. ARTIST: FRANCISCO TAMAGNO (1851-1933) SIZE: 38 x 53 1/2 in./96.6 x 135.8 cm PRINTER: La Lithographie Parisienne Robin, Paris DESCRIPTION: The trademark of Tamagno’s Terrot advertising was sheer attitude combined with a healthy dose of overstatement. Many of his designs for the company feature a young lady atop her Terrot outpacing airplanes and locomotives, or easily pedaling through mountainous terrain. Here, a different type of attitude is on display: masculine confidence and industry in action. And while this architect surveying the construction of his latest building is doing so in rapid fashion courtesy of his Terrot motorbike, Tamagno makes sure to include the previously noted predilection on the “Publicité Reservée,” which just so happens to be covered in almost every other design he created for Terrot. It’s not only a wonderful turn-of-the-century construction document, but a virtual Tamagno sampler as well. Terrot bikes were successful enough during the 1890s, but the firm really came into its own with motorcycles in 1901, and remained in business until the 1960s with one of the best makes in France. Cachou Lajaunie is French advertisement from 1905 by the artist, Francisco Tamangno. Cachou Lajaunie is a licorice candy whose strong flavor was designed to disguise the smoker's breath. Tamangno's composition places the Victorian woman in the center. She holds the small tin of Cachou Lajaunie as she is admired by several men representing each of the marketed professions. Below the poster reads, "Recommended for smokers, chauffeurs, cyclists etcâ€¦" The candy is still in production today in France. Francisco Tamagno (1851 -?) was of Portuguese origin, starting his artistic career as a portrait painter. Tamagno moved to Paris sometime in the 1880's and became the house artist of the Printer Camis, where he started off creating theatrical playbills and moved up to creating posters for railroads, bicycles makers and distillers. Here, she has managed to leave in her wake a steaming locomotive, and the engine driver shakes his fist in frustration. Terrot bikes were successful enough during the 1890s, but the firm really came into its own with motorcycles in 1901, and remained in business until the 1960s with one of the best makes in France. Original Vintage Terrot & Cie Bicycle Poster by Tamagno 1908

This classically designed poster was created to promote Terrot Bicycles and the tours you could take using them. Here we see a coupleleading one such tour; she points out a vista in the distance while he looks up from his map. This clever woman is featured in many posters for the company by the artist, Francisco Tamagno. Francisco Tamagno (1851-1933) was of Portuguese origin, and started his artistic career as a portrait painter. Tamagno moved to Paris sometime in the 1880's and became the house artist of the Printer Camis, where he started off creating theatrical playbills and moved up to creating posters for railroads, bicycle makers, and distillers. Tamagno's style is highly pictorial and his work can be identified through the use of lively, bright colors. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
