Exotically painted plaster sculpture, signed on bottom with "NY 92", 12" ht. x 9" wd. x 8" dp. Ionel Talpazan 1955-3015 Ionel Talpazan escaped Bucharest, Romania, by swimming across the Danube staying in Yugoslavia until he was given refuge status in NYC. Abused as a child, his mother threw him out of the house during a rain storm for losing a farm tool only to awake to an all encompassing "Blue Light." He became obsessed with the sky, Blue Energy, UFOs and Spaceships, his spaceship constructions multiplying until there was little room for him in his apartment. Sometimes he could be spotted near MOMA trying to sell his drawings on the street. He often carried a small bird in his coat pocket. His complex drawings depicted space ship technology and energy sources such as nuclear, magnetic, solar, anti-gravitational, volcanic and vacuum. Maybe he was trying to escape his childhood. An work on paper landscape of New York City possibly illustrating the Majestic on East 72nd Street and Central Park West by 20th / 21st Century outsider artist Ionel Talpazan (1955-2015, Romanian). ‘Born in Romania in 1955, Ionel Talpazan was raised in a foster home. When he was 8 years old, he experienced the presence of a UFO while sleeping by a lake close to his home: he witnessed a craft appear and hover above him, and was enveloped by a beam of blue light for a brief period of time. In 1987, he escaped Romania by swimming the Danube River, and lived in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and was eventually able to emigrate to the US as a political refugee. He lives in New York City, where he often sells his work on the street. Like other Outsider Artists whose creativity is mediumistic, UFO experiencers feel they are channeling information and images from an otherworldly source, and produce artwork as a way of partnering with this source. For decades, Talpazan has been engaged in what he considers to be research of UFO technology by producing countless drawings on board, depicting alien spacecraft. These are often colorful, dynamic views of what a craft might look like to the human eye, and also diagrammatic views that depict the inner workings of alien technology. Talpazan’s work is driven by a powerful and generative paradox: he feels he possesses knowledge for which no measurable language yet exists, yet he feels obliged to present it to the world in a palpable way. This challenge is what charges each drawing with energy. His crafts appear to whirl at high speeds, propelled by complex but believable propulsion systems. Talpazan’s strong conviction in his unexplained knowledge is what gives these drawings their authority, and his lifelong dedication to sharing his vision with us is truly awe-inspiring.’ bio written by Jenifer P. Borum on Outsider Art Fair website. This work is matted and unframed. It is in a cellophane bag. The work is signed and dated Ionel Talpazan NYC ‘95. The work itself measures approximately 17 in wide by 14 in high. The overall measurements are approximately 20 in wide by 16 in high. The work on paper appears to be in good condition.
