    TOYOCHIKA TAKAMURA: A BRONZE FLOWER VASE By Toyochika Takamura (1890-1972), signed Toyochika Japan, 20th century The bulbous body rising from a ribbed straight foot to a trumpet neck, with a rich reddish ochre patination with a stylized design against a lustrous brown ground. The base signed TOYOCHIKA. With a wood storage box signed Toyochika and sealed Geijutsuin Kaiin and Toyochika and inscribed Itome koshi hanaire (flower vase with thread-band lower section). Condition: Excellent condition. Provenance: Dutch collection. Previously auctioned at Christie´s New York, in Japanese and Korean Art on 22 September 2005, lot 247, sold for USD 1,440. Weight: 727 g Dimensions: Height 18.5 cm Toyochika Takamura, a student of bronze artist Tsuda Shinobu, graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1915. Recognized as a Living National Treasure in 1964, he specialized in metal casting using the lost wax method. In 1926, Takamura helped establish the craft group called Mukei and was instrumental in including crafts in the Teiten exhibitions. He experimented with Constructivist aesthetics in the 1920s and co-founded the Real Craft Art Association in 1935. Toyochika came from a renowned artistic family, with his father Takamura Koun and brother Takamura Kotaro also making significant contributions to the art world.     Of squat globular shape with a tiny neck and covered by a chestnut brown patina with reddish spots. Seal mark reading Toyochika at the base. Wooden box (not belonging). Takamura Toyochika (1890-1972) was a student of the famous bronze artist Tsuda Shinobu. As an exhibitor at the Teiten, he received numerous awards. In 1964 he was nominated Living National Treasure for bronze casting in the lost wax process.

    TAKAMURA TOYOCHIKA (1890-1972) A bronze koro (incense burner), Showa era (1926-1989), c. 1930 The incense burner cast in rogin (shibuichi) in a hemispherical form set on a tiered, splayed, stem foot, the stem and lid pierced with an open flower-petal motif, the sides of the basin decorated with two abstract floral motifs in relief, signed on the underside in cast seal-form Toyochika With wood tomobako inscribed on the interior of the lid Rogin koro and signed and sealed on the underside of the lid Toyochika 5in (12.7cm) high; 4 3/4in (12.1cm) diameter The third son of the acclaimed sculptor Takamura Koun, Takamura Toyochika studied bronze casting under Tsuda Shinobu and graduated in 1915 from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he became Associate Professor in 1926 and full Professor in 1934. After World War II, he showed regularly at the national Nitten exhibitions. In 1964, he was designated a Ningen Kokuho (Living National Treasure). His work is included in the collections of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Toyochika often favored the geometries of the global machine age but in the case of this incense burner he might also have been inspired by Korean Silla-period, stem cups: unglazed, grey stoneware ceramics that utilize geometric cut-outs to ornament their supporting stems.     Signed Toyochika, Showa Period (1950s-1960s) With mottled silver-coloured and dark brownish-green patination, the form imitating an archaic Chinese ding, the body with an everted mouth and flat rim supported on three hollow cylindrical legs cast with vertical lines, the shoulder cast with eight broken rounded rectangular nested motifs, signed underneath with a cast mark Toyochika, with fitted wood box bearing the signature and seal of Takamura Toyochika 7 3/8 x 9 3/16in. (18.7 x 23.3cm.) NOTES Born in Tokyo in 1890, the third son of the wood-carver and sculptor Takamura Koun, Takamura Toyochika graduated in 1915 from the Metalwork Department of Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko [Tokyo Art School] where he evidently studied under Tsuda Shinobu (see Lot 110). As a member of the Kokkosha [Dark Radiance], Mukei [Formless], Jitsuzai Kogei [Real Craft] and other groups he promoted the modernisation of the traditional crafts before joining Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko first as assistant and later, in 1933, as full professor. A regular exhibitor at the the official Teiten [Imperial Exhibition] and its successors, after World War II he served as a member of the Nihon Geijutsuin [Japan Art Academy]. In 1964 he was named Mukei Bunkazai Hojisha [Holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property] in the chukin category.
