Condition B: tears and repaired tears at edges, some into text; small losses, creases and abrasions at edges; archival tape on verso; pin holes in corners; Cunard Line ink stamp in lower right image. Paper. The Bengal-Nagpur Railway Company was registered in London in 1887 to construct a more direct route between Calcutta and Bombay. The management of the railway was taken over by the Government of India in 1944. The Black Pagoda, illustrated here, is the nickname of the famous Konark [Konarak] Sun Temple in Odisha, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its original construction dating back to the 13th century, the Hindu temple is dedicated to the sun god Surya.

Condition B+: repaired tears at bottom edge and lower margins, some slightly into image; small loss in lower left corner; abrasions at edges; creases in image. Paper. Jute, which has a long history of being grown in Bengal, is a vegetable fiber that can be spun into cloth. Under British rule, the jute industry in Bengal flourished and the material was sailed to Calcutta on ships that would have been a regular sight on the Brahmaputra River. Tait worked for the publicity department of the Indian State Railways, for whom he designed over a dozen posters and other publicity materials.

        GERALD GEORGE WYNNE TREVREDYN TAIT (1891-1954) [INDIAN RAILWAY.] Scrapbook with sketches, drawings, photographs and more. 1930s-40s. Condition varies, generally A-. Tait worked for the publicity department of the Indian State Railways, for whom he designed over a dozen posters and other publicity materials. This, his personal scrapbook, was put together during the early 1930s. Contents include: illustrations, other drawings and poster studies (in black and white and color); typed poems (perhaps written by Tait); 10 railway poster stamps bearing his designs (including some duplicates); a typed, 3 page diary of a war-time event and other type-script pages; loose photographs - portraits, group shots, Indian landmarks, photo postcards (one signed "Gerald"), landscapes and street scenes; a copy of the London Illustrated News, December 20, 1930, containing the article "Light and Shade of Indian Architecture: Shrines of a Changing Empire Portrayed in 'Woodcut' Style," illustrated by Tait, and 5 original pen and ink drawings of the "woodcut" style Indian landmarks (of the 8 illustrated in the article).
