Géza Szóbel, Czech 1905-1963- La Femme, 1943; oil on board, signed upper right, 73x60.5cm (ARR) Provenance: Private Collection, London Exhibition: The Redfern Gallery, London, 'Geza Szobel', 1943 Note:This piece is by the Hungarian-born French artist Geza Szobel. Szobel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague before moving to Paris in 1927, where he trained under Fernand Léger. It was in Paris, where Szobel settled permanently in the 1930s, that he met contemporaries including Marc Chagall, Le Corbusier, Emmanuel Mane-Katz, and Robert and Sonia Delaunay. Szobel’s work was clearly shaped by the dynamic artistic environment of early twentieth-century Paris, exhibiting the influences of defining movements such as fauvism, cubism, and expressionism. Nevertheless, despite displaying the impact of these approaches, Szobel’s art does not fit neatly into any particular category, instead adopting a highly individual style which moved between figuration and more geometric abstraction, the exploration of which can be perceived in these works.  Szobel’s work is in the collection of the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Musée de Grenoble, and the Musée d’Art modern Grand-Duc Jean in Luxembourg. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Czechoslovak Institute in London, Galerie de France in Paris, and the Victor Waddington Galleries in Dublin, and he also participated in group exhibitions at the Salon des Surindépendants and the Salon de Mai, both in Paris. Gouache on cardboard France, 1948 Géza Szóbel (1905-1963) - Hungarian painter Signed in pencil 'Szóbel' and probably dated '48' lower right Decorative, semi-figural composition in blue Matted and framed under glass Gilt wooden frame, antique-style Dimensions: 34.5 x 30.4 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Hungary Géza Szóbel's paintings have sold for up to 6,000 euros in the international auction market The decorative composition in blue by Géza Szóbel dates from 1948 and depicts a geometric-human figure with horse in a stylized landscape. The contours are determined by strong black lines. The background and the figures are rendered in extensive forms with flattened depth effect. Géza Szóbel's artistic style is attributed to the semi-figurative painting. Since 1934, the artist lived in Paris and was inspired there by the abstract and surreal paintings of his contemporaries. The framing cardboard on the back shows an exhibition label and a stamp of the auction house Claude Robert, Paris, as well as a label of the auction house Ria Gerner, Strasbourg, and a label of a gallery in Budapest. The condition of the work is very good with minor crease marks and light wear affecting the frame. The overall dimensions, including the frame, are 54 x 50.5 cm, and the stretcher measures 34.5 x 30.4 cm. (cko) Géza Szóbel (1905-1963) Géza Szobel studied painting in Budapest, Berlin and Prague.
