Douglas Swan was born on 28th April 1930 in Connecticut USA of Scottish parents whose dreams of a better life in America were thwarted by the Wall Street Crash, they returned penniless to Scotland when Douglas was only 4 1/2 years old. Douglas spent his childhood in Carnoustie and attended High school in Arbroath, an east coast fishing town. He studied art at Dundee college of Art after completing National service. Equal to art was his immense passion for music - he was an accomplished classical pianist with an immense knowledge and insight into this genre, he also had a fine tenor voice and was happy to sing Schubert lieder or the folk music of his beloved homeland.
