        Agus Suwage (b. 1959) Untitled, 1996

        Est: RM12,000 - RM22,000

Agus Suwage must be narcissism personified: He is in most of his works, head or full body et al, enacting real or farcical actions, playing puppeteer and victim at the same time. He is stark naked to the waist down with little toy koala figurines clambering all over his body, and with the odd imprint, Sunshine State (Florida?), stencilled on his tummy area. He bears a cynic face with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth, as if in deceit like straight out of a black-and-white film noir. Agus likes to play on the cynical in his dramatised commentary. As Aaron Seeto, the director of the Macan Museum, commented: “Far from being simple analogies and observations of the changing world around him, the works of Agus Suwage usually involves constant self-interrogation, probing the myths and symbols that frame the complexity of human relations and national political power…” Agus Suwage, the former Oei Hok Sioe, is a provocative Post-Suharto contemporary artist, having been represented by key Southeast Asian galleries like Silverlens, Cemeti Gallery, Mizuma Gallery, Arndt and Yavuz. Among his major selections are in the 2nd Asia-Pacific Triennial (1996), the 6th Havana Biennale (1997), the Kwangju Biennale (2000), the Singapore Biennale (2006), and the landmark Sunshower exhibition at the Mori Art Musuem in Tokyo, Japan (2017). In 2009, on the occasion of him turning 50, he was given a Retrospective called Still Crazy After All These Years at the Jogja National Museum. He graduated in Graphic Design from the Bandung Institute of Technology. In 2022, his exhibition titled Agus Suwage: The Theater Of Me, was held at Museum Macan.

        Jan. 14, 2024

Agus Suwage (b. 1959) Kissing The Death, 2010

        Est: RM16,000 - RM30,000

The allegorical pact with the Devil, Mephistopheles, is a kind of capitulation in the acceptance of death, as a means towards achieving something more powerful. Death comes with a haloed skull, imbued with its sense of twisted beauty, the beginning of the end. The artist, Agus Suwage, who insinuates himself in the painted mock theatrical dramas he concocted, resorts to this overt self-abnegation and submission, but the ending is still inconclusive. Death may be a morbid subject, even for one who was 51 when Agus painted it, but the juxtaposition of a skeletal remain and one all flesh-and-blood presents unlimited possibilities. Agus is also known for his gold skeletal sculpture, Luxury Crime (2009). Agus Suwage, the former Oei Hok Sioe, is a provocative Post-Suharto contemporary artist, having been represented by key Southeast Asian galleries like Silverlens, Cemeti Gallery, Mizuma Gallery, Arndt and Yavuz. Jul. 17, 2022

Agus Suwage (b. Indonesia, 1959) Beban Sang Pelukis, 1994

        Est: RM30,000 - RM50,000

The stylized monochrome work in the form of German expressionism makes a strong statement as a personal contemplation of the roles of artistic practice in society. In Beban Sang Pelukis, the artist is weighed down by several elements, yearning for independence from the existing network of principles and theories required in the study of art. Located closely to the figure’s heart is the value of aesthetics. Agus Suwage’s art practice began to flourish during the mid-1990s during the years of regime change. He received international acclaim during this period and was invited to participate in international forums. His works frequently reference the social conditions, issues of power, myth, collective values, and stereotypes in society. One of Indonesia’s most prominent contemporary artists, Agus has taken part in the Jogja Biennale (2007 and 2013), Gwangju Biennale (2000), the Asia-Pacific Triennial (1996), Havana Biennale (1997), Singapore Biennale (2006). He received his MFA in Graphic Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology in 2006 after his BFA in 1979-1986. Since his first solo in Yogyakarta in 1991 (Cemeti Art House), he also had three solos at Tyler Rollins in New York in 2011, 2013 and 2017. His works are collected by the Singapore Art Museum, Fukuoka Art Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Saitama Museum of Modern Art (Japan), Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Cornell University (United States).

        AGUS SUWAGE : Quote #2, 2016

        Est: RM22,000 - RM45,000

Born in 1959 in Central Java, Indonesia, Agus Suwage is a contemporary Indonesian artist known for representing himself in paintings and sculptures. He studied graphic design at Bandung’s Institute of Technology and later decided to become an artist that focuses on fine art after completing his studies in the 1980s. Agus Suwage uses his own self-portraits, probing questions about society, culture, religion, and man’s relationship to animals in critical yet humorous ways. Agus Suwage mentions, noting that “self-portraits are ‘the easiest’ because the model is ready anytime the artist requires him to be,”. The artist is currently living and working in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

        Est: RM20,000 - RM35,000

An apparition of Indian Independence fighter and pacifist Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) is superimposed over the blue yonder of sky and sea in an apparent environmental message that reads: ‘This planet can provide for human need but not for human greed!! Unending greed is detrimental, disastrous, destructive; it’s not a good trait to own. Often, Man especially the sceptics pooh-poohing climate change, has made the planet inhospitable by over-exploiting natural marine resources and polluting the sea with chemical contaminants and plastics apart from polluting the air with factory effluents and non-biodegradable products. The illusory image also hints at impermanence of life. While Gandhi would be a nice symbolic spokesman, sometimes such aphorisms as this are ascribed to anyone from Einstein to Brad Pitt in an unrestrained social media. Blue often exudes something clean and fresh.

Don’t trust bullshit artistes clad in balaclava who promises you prunella and roses. Such snake-oil hucksters abound in every level of society and especially in politics where empty promises are made just to get elected, or re-elected — people generally have short memories and can be easily appeased with trinkets or more empty promises. Agus Suwage is one of the most internationally high-profiled Indonesian artists. Agus Suwage was given a Retrospective by the Yogyakarta Art Museum in 2009, at a relative young age of 50. There was an accompanying 670-page monograph, Still Crazy After All These Year. He had been invited for the Yogja Biennale (2007 and 2013), Gwangju Biennale (2000), the Asia-Pacific Triennial (1996), Havana Biennale (1997), Singapore Biennale (2006), and had residencies in Saitama, Japan (1999-2000) and Brisbane, Australia (1996). Reality is relative, with the real and the counterfeits becoming increasingly difficult to tell apart. Fake news, fake faces (literally) and boobs, fake art… The eye and heart are easily enticed by things flashy, never mind if shaped in skull heads, with Mickey Mouse ears and coloured plastic baubles as eyes, and what more decked with ‘royal’ crowns and fashioned in precious metals of gold and silver. In a mock Jeff Koons fetishizing whatchamacallit, Agus Suwage, one of Indonesia’s leading contemporary artists, turns out a set of work presumably art and / or jewellery and / or ‘award’ for the fervent seeker of memorabilia, with an edition of five to boot. Agus Suwage likes to delve into his pet themes of identity, self-reflection and the inherent societal contradictions. In 2009 at the relative young age of 50, he was given a Retrospective at the Yogyakarta Art Museum, complete with a 670-page monograph, Still Crazy After All These Years.

        Jun. 30, 2019

Agus Suwage (b. 1959) Mors Certa, Vita Incerta, 2012

        Est: RM30,000 - RM55,000

This crumpled compressed mesh of mock skeletal remains in a transparent showcase goes by the lofty Latin title of Mors Certa, Vita Incerta, meaning ‘Death is Certain, Life is Uncertain.’ The use of Latin derived from Etruscan, greek and Phoenician alphabets gives the work an áncient’aura, but beyond semantics, death does not speak of the original intrinsic forms or the persona behind the shape, even if it somehow and quizzically looks shaped like a guitar and is shown in an oblong transparent showcase. The work was shown in a group exhibition in the Hong Kong Art Fair in 2012. On another tack, the work might hint at humanoids (fake humans) referred to as replicants in Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi fantasy Blade Runner, and the use of the Voigt-Kampff Scale to ascertain humans from humanoids. Of mixed Chinese Javanese descent and a Muslim convert, Agus has taken part in the Yogja Biennale (2007 and 2013), Gwangju Biennale (2000), the Asia-Pacific Triennial (1996), Havana Biennale (1997), Singapore Biennale (2006). He received his MFA in Graphic Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology in 2006 after his BFA in 1979-1986. Oct. 28, 2018

AGUS SUWAGE (b. 1959) Self Portrait And Co #4, 2013

        Est: RM50,000 - RM75,000

Call it narcissicism, but Agus Suwage has done a lot of self-portraitures or self-representations from the mid-1990s using his own face and body, partly because of convenience and monetary issue. Besides the obvious investigation into self, it is also a kind of self-therapy and a self-parody, and a projection of a larger more universal outreach. It all started from a photographer housemate using him as a ‘free' model for experiments. Apart from the self, Agus also uses his works to probe questions about society, culture, religion, death and Man's relationship with animals. Here, with the outline of his head against long scribblings are shown a raft of books which might or might not related to the meaning envisaged. Est: RM55,000 - RM70,000

Agus Suwage studied graphic design at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). He has participated in many group exhibitions and held solo shows within the region and USA. He has also participated in artist residencies around the world, including India, Japan and Australia. His works has been collected by museums including Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Japan, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan, and the Singapore Art Museum. He is now considered as Indonesia's most revered and internationally active contemporary artist with approximately 150 museums and galleries having exhibited his works worldwide. The present lot was exhibited in a group exhibition titled "Membaca Frida Kahlo" (Reading Frida Kahlo) at Nadi Gallery, Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2001. Title of the painting seems to be taken from the Frida Kahlo's Memory of the Heart (1937), while the subject matter is apparently inspired by Kahlo's work titled "The Two Fridas" (1939). In the presnt lot Suwage tries to capture the misery and pain which she experienced in her life, including the life she spent with the famous Diego Rivera. Suwage's witty expression which is usually visible in most of his self portraits is not seen in "My Heart'. He chooses instead to portray himself without expression and without cloths, gazing coldly with his heart protruded form his chest and a hose implanted to one of the arteries. Instead of using clouds as background setting of the figure, as in "Memory of the Heart" and "The Two Fridas", Suwage use leaves in the present lot, which apparently were inspired by one of Kahlo's masterpieces "Self-portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird" (1940). In contrast with Kahlo's colourful paintings, in the present lot, Suwage use a monochromatic approach to convey the sorrow and anger of Kahlo's life that he studied and later put onto the canvas.

Indonesia, 1959 RESURRECTION, 2000 Signed and dated 'AGUS SUWAGE '2000' (lower right) Acrylic on canvas 140cm x 70cm "Suwage is usually reticent about the intentions behind the making of his art. As in real life, he rarely explains; he shows, smiles, and walks away. He shape-shifts and slides, slipping in and out of characters on canvas, playing the tortured, the oppressor, the revered, the jester, the fool, the glut, the masochist. Framed within the image of the artist in his myriad guises are layers of socio-political commentary and critique of human nature. Meanings are multi-faceted and difficult to pin down, new associations and possibilities are produced at each turn. His quiet statements often deliver stealthy blows, calculated moves designed to hit different notes on the emotional and intellectual scale. The personality behind each painting provides an insight into the artist's personality and inner thoughts, at times brazen, introspective or sharp with social satire."
