          Est: $12,000 - $18,000

LADISLAV SUTNAR (1897-1976) VYSTAVA MODERNIHO OBCHODU / [MODERN COMMERCE EXHIBITION]. 1929. 18x24 inches, 45 3/4x61 cm. Melantrich, Prague. Condition A-: minor repaired tears and creases in margins; minor restoration in image. Matted. Ladislav Sutnar was both a professor and practitioner of design. In addition to teaching at Prague's State School of Graphic Art, he was also a pioneer in the fields of informational graphics and corporate identity and was the official designer of the Czechoslovak Government's exhibitions in foreign countries (winning several awards for his work in this field). His ground-breaking Functionalist work was largely a fusion of Bauhaus ideas and typography, Constructivism, and his own work with photomontage and design. In the mid 1920s he is believed to be the first Czech designer to have incorporated photomontage into poster design (Sutnar p. 305) and by the 1930s, photomontages figured prominently in many of his book jacket designs and were a hallmark of his work. This poster promotes one of three trade fairs occurring in Brno, Czechoslovakia's second largest city, in the late summer of 1929 (the other two, a Brewery & Malting exhibition and an exhibition on Modern Women are mentioned at the bottom of the poster), The image boasts three of the city's newest and finest functionalist architecture projects: the Avon Hotel (seen at left), the Commercial and Industrial Palace and the Commercial Tradesmen's Pavilion. Universally considered to be one of Sutnar's finest designs, this poster "poetically cumulates current communication symbols [into] something of a Functionalist version of the 'pictorial poem' . . . [it reflected] the approaches of Cubist and Constructivist pictorial collages" (Sutnar, p. 305). Writing in 1961 in Visual Design In Action, Sutnar stated: "In our 'visual civilization,' words are superseded by images, drawings, graphs and other visual symbols which convey the message faster, more reliably and more convincingly than verbal descriptions." This is the Czech version. Rare. We have found no other copy at auction in over 20 years. Sutnar 546, Avant Garde p. 142, Weill 460, Czech Functionalism 271, Czech Avant Garde p. 61, Modernism 129, Trade Fair 61, Berman / Juan March p. 142, Clash of Ideologies p. 82, Witkovsky pl. 44. LADISLAV SUTNAR (1897-1976) ZIJEME / [WE LIVE]. Group of 20 issues. 1931-1933. Each 10x7 1/4 inches, 25 1/2x18 1/2 cm. Druzstevni Prace, Prague. Condition varies, generally A- / B+: minor wear to covers. Sutnar, as Artistic Director of Druzstevni Prace, was responsible for the artistic design of this periodical, the covers of which are all like mini posters. Following Karel Teige's belief that "the cover was an advertisement for the book . . . and to make this desirable poster-like balance as strong an impact as possible [the artist must choose] primary colors and geometric shapes," Sutnar added his own elements of photomontage and typography to Teige's concept of cover design (Oxford, p. 59). His aesthetic helped to further promote Functionalist design into mainstream society. Among the artists whose work is featured in this lifestyle magazine, both written and visual, are Josef Sudek, Jaromir Funke, Alexander Hackenschmied, Karel Teige, Vladimir Krejcar, Le Corbusier, Man Ray, Max Ernst and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. These issues frequently appear bound together; it is rare to find them loose, as issued. This group includes eight issues from 1931, ten from 1932, and two from 1933. Est: $12,000 - $18,000

LADISLAV SUTNAR (1897-1976) VYSTAVA MODERNIHO OBCHODU / [MODERN COMMERCE EXHIBITION.] 1929. 18 1/4x24 1/4 inches, 46 1/4x61 1/2 cm. Melantrich, Prague. Condition A: small repaired tear at right edge; unobtrusive horizontal fold; diagonal crease in upper left text. Matted and framed. 44. China designed by Ladislav Sutnar (1897 - 1976). Circa 1925. Vintage warm-toned gelatin silver print. 23,3 x 16,8 cm. Czech credit/copyright stamp with Josef Sudek's name, as well as Sutnar's signature stamp and number stamp on the verso. In the 1920s the Czech designer Ladislav Sutnar was among a group of European designers and architects who strove to improve the quality in everyday life for the wider public through industrial design. By creating brand identities for companies while applying principles of standardization, serial production and eye-catching clarity to advertising and domestic products, they sought a more functional yet aesthetic approach to articles of everyday life. Sutnar designed tableware, books and magazines, textiles and children's toys. Many of the advertising photographs Josef Sudek made for Ladislav Sutnar also bear Sutnar's signature stamp on the verso. The two artists worked together very successfully and these earlier images by Sudek are quite rare on the art market today. - A few minimal handling marks, minimal oxidation mirroring in edges, traces of previous mounting on the verso, otherwise a rich dark print in very good condition. Condition A-: minor tears at edges. Paper. In 1939 Sutnar came to New York to help set up the Czech Pavillion at the New York World's Fair. With the outbreak of war in Europe, Sutnar chose to stay in the United States. From 1941-1960 Sutnar worked with Sweet's Catalog Service, a company that produced complex technical catalogues for architects, engineers and builders. This two-decade long association resulted in the pioneering redesign of the company's catalogues in which Sutnar's uncluttered and organized vision and his Functionalist background brought order, clarity and ease of comprehension to a field muddy with technical information. Perhaps his best known but least acknowledged contribution is the use of parentheses for telephone area codes, now considered a milestone in information graphics. In 1946 he designed several posters for the one-year-old United Nations. While this poster is unsigned, it clearly reflects his design sensibilities and echoes the published photo-mural design he created for a wall at NBC in Rockefeller Center in 1946. French version.
