Roberta Pyx Sutherland's education includes a BFA from the University of Victoria, study at Emily Carr College of Art and Design, the University of Sheffield UK, Ikebana Ohara School, and residencies at the Banff Centre. Her teachers and mentors include Jack Wise, Roy Kiyooka, Don Jarvis and Jack Shadbolt. Since 1982, the artist has exhibited widely in Canada, Mexico, Europe and the US. The Canada Council for the Arts and Seagrams Art Collection hold her works. For the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts, she mentored an Artist in Residence program. She is one of 50 artists featured in Canada’s Raincoast at Risk: Art for an Oil-Free Coast. Roberta Pyx Sutherland is a Canadian artist based on Hornby Island. From her first solo exhibition at the Victoria Art Gallery in the 1980’s her work has focused on the relationships of cosmic patterning, divine intelligence, the environment and the interconnectivity of all life forms. A prolific artist, Sutherland uses a wide range of media in her work including paints, pigments, natural dyes and inks, photography and handmade papers. She also creates site-specific installations, the most well-known an Andy Warhol tribute for the Hornby Island Arts Council, one of the world’s largest Tomato Soup Cans. Most recently Sutherland created a Lenten installation for the Chapel Gallery of Victoria’s St. Matthias Anglican Church.

Her early inspirations included Gordon Smith, Jack Shadbolt and Toni Onley, whom she watched create the huge abstract mural for the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. After working on a CUSO project in Africa, and travelling through India, she returned to Canada and enrolled in the art program at the University of Victoria, where she was mentored by Jack Wise in the art of calligraphy. Sutherland continued her studies in Hawaii, California and Japan, and trained as a printmaker in England. She returned home to complete a residency at the Banff School of the Arts, while Tak Tanabe was head of the program. Since 1982, Sutherland has exhibited widely in Canada, Mexico, Europe and the US., with more than 25 solo exhibitions in both public and commercial galleries, and well in excess of 35 group exhibitions. In 1987, Sutherland had a solo exhibition entitled Earth Birthing at the Art Gallery of Victoria. Her work is found in prominent private and public collections, including The Canada Council for the Arts and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. She is one of 50 artists featured in the publication Canada's Raincoast at Risk: Art for an Oil-Free Coast. Sutherland has been living on Hornby Island, British Columbia since 1993.
