Ivan Sushchenko (Russia,b 1930) oil painting

            Est: $450 - $575

ARTIST: Ivan Akimovich Sushchenko (Russian, born 1930) TITLE: Western Mining Prospector YEAR: 1998 MEDIUM: oil on canvas board CONDITION: Very good. No visible inpaint under UV light. ART SIZE: 10 x 20 inches / 25 x 50 cm BOARD SIZE: 13 x 23 inches / 33 x 58 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 50c Western Mining Prospector stamp issued June 18, 1998. On January 24, 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, California. Although many people were skeptical of the news of the discovery, President James Polk's opening message to Congress in December laid their doubts to rest. He declared, "The accounts of the abundance of gold in that territory are of such an extraordinary character as would scarcely command belief were they not corroborated by authentic reports." Struck with gold fever, hundreds of thousands of Americans and foreigners journeyed to the Far West in search of their fortune. Within four years of the discovery of gold, California's population had swollen from 14,000 to more than 250,000! In 1859, gold was again discovered -- this time in Colorado, followed by finds in Montana in 1863, South Dakota in 1876 and Arizona in 1877. Each new discovery led to boomtowns springing up overnight across the West. A prospector foresaw the outcome of the gold rushes, writing, "As the discovery of gold in the mountains of California was the forerunner of an immense emigration, and the immediate cause of the erection of a new and powerful state upon the Pacific coast, so the recent discovery of the precious metal in and around the vast 'mother range' of our mountain system, is destined to exert an incalculable influence upon the growth and prosperity of the country. The Atlantic and Pacific coasts, instead of being, as they are now, divided countries, will become parts of a compact whole, joined and cemented together by bonds of mutual interest." PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. Apr. 18, 2021

Ivan Sushchenko (B. 1930) "Christopher Columbus"

            Est: $300 - $500

Ivan Akimovich Sushchenko (Russian, B. 1930) "Christopher Columbus" Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which appeared on the $5 Columbus stamp Souvenir Sheet issued May 22, 1992. Until recently, history presented a rather simplistic, and arguably inaccurate, view of Christopher Columbus and his achievements. School children read that Queen Isabella of Spain pawned her jewels to finance his first voyage. They were also told that he actually discovered America, a term under which one massive continent falls. The truth is infinitely more interesting. Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy, to Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa. To this day, no one really knows what he even looked like. He went to sea as a youth, possibly as young as age 14 but more probably at age 19 or 20. His journeys took him to Africa, England and Ireland -- perhaps even to Iceland. He eventually settled in Portugal, marrying into one of the country's first families of exploration. Denied sponsorship for a voyage of discovery by the Portuguese king, Columbus turned to Spain. In 1492 he set sail to test his theory -- that the east could be reached by sailing west. Queen Isabella never had to pawn her jewels, and his first landfall in the New World fell on the beaches of present-day San Salvador, not on the continent of North America. For a few years he blazed brightly at the Spanish court. But eventually stripped of his honors and glory for bungling the administration of New World colonies, he died in 1506. This portrait is based upon a painting by Italian artist Lorenzo Lotto which is just one of the many renditions of Columbus. Image Size: 18.75 x 16.25 in. Overall Size: 22.75 x 20.25 in. Unframed. Ivan Akimovich Sushchenko (Russian, B. 1930) "Steamship" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 1c Pan-American Invert: City of Alpena Steamship stamp issued March 29, 2001. During the 19th century when Americans began traveling West by the thousands, the Great Lakes provided a convenient route for passenger and freight. Vessels powered by sail were commonly used -- just as they had been for centuries throughout the world. The invention of the steamboat revolutionized waterway transportation. American engineer and inventor Robert Fulton designed the first commercially successful steamboat -- Clermont. He adapted James Watt's steam engine (patented in 1769) to his boat and, in 1807, the Clermont steamed 150 miles up the Hudson River from New York City to Albany in 32 hours. The boat later provided regular passenger service on the Hudson and opened the door for other steamboat service on the Great Lakes and along the Atlantic coast. In 1809, the Phoenix, designed by John Stevens, became the first steamboat to make an ocean voyage, traveling along the Atlantic coast and up the Delaware River from New York City to Philadelphia. It was only a matter of time before steam would be used to power ships across the Atlantic, and in 1819, the American ship, the Savannah, became the first steamship to do so. The Savannah traveled from New York City to Liverpool in 29 days. However, in 1838, the British side-wheeler Sirius became the first ship to cross the Atlantic under steam power alone. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 80c Pan-American Invert: American Bison stamp issued March 29, 2001. The Pan-American Exposition opened on May 1, 1901, in the beautiful city of Buffalo, New York. To truly represent the city, as well as American progress and achievement, the exposition committee selected the buffalo as a proud symbol to promote this spectacular event. Identified by its distinctive shoulder hump and curved horns, this creature is the heaviest land animal in North America -- weighing up to 2,000 pounds. Thick, coarse hair protects it from the harsh winters of the plains. For centuries, these majestic animals were essential to the survival of the Plains Indian tribes. Buffalo provided almost every necessity -- food, clothing and shelter. Hides were made into leggings, mittens, caps, moccasins, shirts, dresses, robes and blankets. Thongs of rawhide were used to tie the heads of hammers and clubs. Nothing was wasted -- bones were used for tools for farming, sinews as thread and bowstrings, horns as spoons, ladles and cups. Buffalo tallow was burned to provide light, and the hooves made into ceremonial rattles. These animals played an important role in Native American beliefs and rituals as well. Many a tribe beseeched the Great Spirit to keep the herds always plentiful. Image Size: 9 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 11.75 x 16.25 in. Unframed. (B16914)

Ivan Akimovich Sushchenko (Russian, B. 1930) "Marquette on the Mississippi" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 1c Marquette on the Mississippi stamp issued June 18, 1998. In 1666, French Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette arrived in Quebec and founded a mission at Sault Saint Marie. Four years later, he established the mission of St. Ignace on the north shore of the Straits of Mackinac. During the spring of 1673, Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac, governor of New France, commissioned Marquette and explorer Louis Jolliet to find the direction and mouth of the Mississippi. The French had learned of this mighty river from the Indians, but it was not known if it led to the Gulf of California or the Gulf of Mexico. Guided by Mascouten Indians, the Marquette party journeyed south on the Fox and Wisconsin rivers. On June 17, 1673, it reached the Mississippi. Infatuated with the river's beauty, Marquette christened it Rivi?re de la Conception. Its Indian name -- Missi Sipi -- persists to this day, however. The expedition traveled south on the river until it encountered belligerent Indians. Although Marquette was fluent in six Indian languages, the party had traveled so far that no one could communicate with the hostiles. In addition, it was rumored that Spanish forces were nearby. Fearful of being captured by the Spanish and losing the expedition's logs, the party decided to turn back. By then, Marquette's exploration had correctly determined that the Mississippi flowed to the Gulf of Mexico. Even more important, his discovery stimulated later settlement of the region and pushed back the frontier. Image Size: 10 x 20.25 in. Overall Size: 12.5 x 22.75 in. Unframed. (B16006)

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 2c Pan-American Invert: Fast Express stamp issued March 29, 2001. Since the invention of the first steam locomotive by Richard Trevithick of England, in 1804, the 19th century has been fondly remembered as the Golden Age of Railroads. The first public railroads using steam engines to haul freight and carry passengers were used in England during the 1820s and 1830s. In America, railroads linked isolated cities of the East to frontier settlements in the West. In 1830, the South Carolina Canal and Railroad Company began the first regularly scheduled steam-powered train service in the United States with its locomotive, the Best Friend of Charleston. Following that, the number of locomotives and railroads in the eastern United States quickly increased. Historic first-runs of locomotives included the DeWitt Clinton on the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad in New York and the John Bull on the Camden and Amboy Railroad in New Jersey -- both in 1831. Although railroads developed rapidly in the eastern United States after 1850, none extended into the remote regions west of the Mississippi River. When Congress passed the Pacific Railroad Act in 1862, however, it opened the way for America's first transcontinental line. Track was laid eastward from Sacramento, California, and westward from a point near Omaha, Nebraska. On May 10, 1869, the two tracks met at Promontory, Utah, and North America became the first continent to have a rail line from coast to coast. Image Size: 9 x 13.75 in. The Atlantic and Pacific coasts, instead of being, as they are now, divided countries, will become parts of a compact whole, joined and cemented together by bonds of mutual interest." Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the $2 Harvesting in the West stamp issued June 18, 1998. From the founding of the nation to the end of the 19th century, farming was the most important economic activity in the United States. The most efficient and productive in the world, American agriculture was blessed with many favorable conditions that contributed to this success. These included abundant fertile soil, moderate climate, ease of private land ownership, growth markets at home and abroad, and the constant development and refinement of farm machinery. Such technological innovations as the cotton gin, iron and steel plows, reapers, threshing machines, grain drills, corn planters, and iron harrows and cultivators transformed the West's vast prairies into the nation's granary. In the early 19th century, hundreds of thousands of farmers migrated west of the Mississippi River to the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountain and West Coast states to take advantage of the region's fertile lands. As a result, by 1860 America had over 2 million farms and agricultural products comprised 82 percent of the nation's exports. The Homestead Act, passed in May 1862, further encouraged westward growth by offering public land grants to small farmers. Within three years 15,000 homestead claims had been established. During the last three decades of the 19th century, the area of cultivated land in the U.S. more than doubled and crop production nearly tripled. The life of a farmer was never easy, however. Regular hardships included bitter cold, intense heat, floods, drought, Indian attacks and locusts. Image Size: 10 x 20.25 in. Overall Size: 12.5 x 22.75 in. Unframed. (B16008)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 4c Pan-American Invert: Electric Automobile stamp issued March 29, 2001. During the 1890s and early 1900s electric automobiles were among the most popular American cars, and were the first automotive vehicles that featured an enclosed body. Although they were slower than gasoline-powered cars (few traveled faster than 20 mph) electric cars were valued for their quiet, smooth-running motor, ease of operation and low maintenance costs. Because the battery needed to be recharged about every 50 miles, these cars were best-suited for driving short distances in towns or cities. The most common uses for electric cars in urban settings included taxi cabs and delivery vehicles. Many models were advertised as "fine carriages in all variety of styles" and built with luxurious interiors, including elegant, curved-glass windows and comfortable seats. In 1900, Review of Reviews made this statement about the electric car -- "It is the handsomest automobile, the easiest to drive, the pleasantest to ride in, but it is not adapted for general use -- say, in rural districts, nor for touring." The stamp on the First Day Cover features the center-inverted re-issue of the 4 Automobile stamp, designed from a photograph of one of the first electric cars ever produced. It was also the first appearance of an automobile on a U.S. postage stamp. Image Size: 9 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 11.75 x 16.25 in. Unframed. (B16912)

This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 5c Fremont on the Rocky Mountains stamp issued June 18, 1998. later he explored the plateau between the upper Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Following this, he undertook several expeditions west of the Mississippi that contributed valuable scientific data and stimulated the public's interest in the region. On August 15, 1842, Fremont planted the U.S. Flag on what he judged to be the highest peak of the majestic Rocky Mountains. In his report to the Chief of the Corps of Topographical Engineers, Fremont testified, "We mounted the barometer in the snow of the summit, and fixing a ramrod in a crevice, unfurled the national flag to wave in the breeze where never flag waved before." The American flag that Fremont raised was a special patriotic banner of his own invention. In place of the field of stars, an eagle grasping an Indian peace pipe and arrows was predominantly displayed -- a design chosen to impress the Indians as a symbol of peace. Six years later, Fremont, now known as "the Pathfinder," returned to the Rockies to lead an expedition investigating a possible southern railroad route to the Pacific. A skilled explorer and popular figure, Fremont was nominated in 1856 to be the first presidential candidate for the newly-formed Republican party, but narrowly lost the election to James Buchanan. With the eruption of the Civil War in 1861, "the Pathfinder" served his country with distinction as major general in charge of the Department of the West. Image Size: 10 x 20.25 in.
