HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNG (workshop of) , AUGSBURG, 1497 - LONDON, 1543 Portrait of Sir Nicholas Carew (1496 - 1539) Oil on panel, parquet 91 x 70 cm How proud he looks, this gentleman in armour! Although encased up to his neck, he wears his hinged cuirass with ease, striking an almost detached pose, his arm bent and his hand on the scabbard of his sword. In his other hand he firmly clutches a staff of command. On this dark armour, here and there, a few reflections shine, attesting to its metallic construction. The only thing that stands out at the waist is the red harness that holds his sword. The dark green background against which this tall figure stands out highlights the features of an emaciated face with a piercing and determined gaze. The features are fine, aristocratic, the eyes sunken under a finely drawn arch of the eyebrows. The nose and cheekbones protrude from the pale, shiny skin. The red beard is carefully trimmed. On his head, there is no helmet, but a beret with a shield bearing his family's arms. An archetypal Renaissance social portrait, this three-quarter, mid-body pose fills the composition and imposes the power of the model whose gaze calmly challenges us. Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was a German painter and engraver from Augsburg. The son of the painter Hans Holbein the Elder (14606-1524), he studied with his brother Ambrosius (1494-1519) in his father's studio, then among the most renowned in the city. He thus developed his talent as a portraitist, which led him to travel throughout Europe. In Basel, he painted members of the upper middle class, including the double portrait of the city's burgomaster, Jakob Meyer, and his wife (1516); then that of Bonifacius Amerbach (1519), a humanist, man of letters and jurist, who introduced him to the philosopher Erasmus, of whom he made two portraits (1523). He was then appointed master by the Basel painters' guild. He also travelled to Italy, to Milan, Florence and Rome, familiarising himself with the innovations of the Renaissance masters; then to France, where he discovered the work of Leonardo da Vinci, and finally to London. There, he was offered prestigious commissions from the aristocracy, including this portrait of Nicholas Carew, of which a preparatory drawing by Holbein (1527) is kept in the Kunstmuseum in Basel. Thomas Moore, Thomas Howard, Robert Cheseman and others followed him at his easel, until Henry VIII, King of England, appointed him in 1536 as the king's chamber painter, thus becoming the official painter of the English court. Between 1538 and 1539, he travelled in Europe to paint portraits of princesses who were candidates for marriage to Henry VIII, after the death of Jeanne Seymour, such as Anne of Cleves, whom the king married in 1540 and whose portrait is kept in the Louvre. But it is probably his double portrait of the French diplomats Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve, known as 'The Ambassadors' (1533, National Gallery, London), which is today his most famous work, because of the anamorphosis of the skull in the foreground. The finesse of his treatment and the psychological attention given to his models, make Hans Holbein one of the greatest portraitists of the European renaissance. Provenance: Private collection, Vienna.
