Joaquim Sunyer Miró Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Etcher, b. 1874 - d. 1956

Joaquim Sunyer (Catalan pronunciation: [?ua'kim su'?e]) (Sitges, 1874–1956) was a Catalan painter often linked to the Noucentisme movement.

He began his artistic education with his uncle, Joaquim Mir, later moving to Barcelona where his fellow students included Joaquín Torres García, Isidro Nonell,[1] and Joaquin Mir Trinxet. In 1896 he moved to Paris, where he became acquainted with the neo-impressionist movement and worked extensively in the style. His paintings of this period include street scenes of working-class life. He also produced graphic works influenced by Toulouse-Lautrec and Théophile Steinlen that emphasize urban night life and urban poverty.[1] He was friends with Picasso, and in the first years of the 20th century the two artists' work were similar in style and subject.[1]

In 1908, Sunyer turned away from Parisian subject matter in favor of the themes that would occupy him for the rest of his life, especially nudes in pastoral landscapes, family scenes, women, and children.[2] He returned to Spain in 1911, establishing himself in his hometown of Sitges. There he painted numerous landscape paintings in which he highlights his preoccupation with capturing the Mediterranean light through the use of very light colours marking a clear rupture with his darker paintings executed in Paris. His compositions are noted as an example of balance, though sacrificing technical perfection for the benefit of a more intense evocative power.

He was an important influence on younger Catalan artists such as Miro.

Signed in the lower right area. Measurements: 91 x 69 cm. The work of Joaquín Sunyer always oscillated between the portrait and the landscape, thus becoming a magnificent observer of his time and the society in which he lived. In this work in particular the author places us before a landscape view in which he introduces numerous elements that turn the work into a documentary image, where the human figure, ruins, trees and a small chapel can be appreciated. The dark colors favor the expressiveness of this work conceived in depth in different planes. Considered one of the greatest representatives of the noucentista style, Sunyer was the nephew of the painter Joaquim de Miró i Argenter, with whom he began painting. Within his work, his landscapes and female nudes stand out, as well as his portraits, totally distant from traditional painting. Considered one of the greatest representatives of the noucentista style, Sunyer was the nephew of the painter Joaquim de Miró i Argenter, with whom he began to paint. His work is particularly notable for his landscapes and female nudes, as well as his portraits, which are far removed from traditional painting. His compositions are an example of balance, always seeking the evocative power of images, figures and atmospheres. After studying at the La Lonja School in Barcelona, Sunyer began his career as an illustrator of popular scenes in "La Vanguardia" in 1896. That same year he took part in the Fine Arts Exhibition. Shortly afterwards he settled in Paris, where he specialised in street scenes and intimate interiors, which he treated in a style influenced by prostimpressionism. In Paris he became friends with Picasso and Hugué, and exhibited at the Salons. During his Parisian period he worked with real dedication, evolving towards a Post-Impressionist language. Between 1905 and 1906 he travelled around Castile, on the initiative of the art dealer Henri Barbazanges, who wanted Spanish themes. He returned to Paris in 1907 and held several exhibitions in the French capital and Liège. He settled in Sitges in 1910, at a time when his style was gradually losing its post-impressionist influences and moving towards Mediterranean themes and the simplified canon figures of Cézanne. These years saw a major change in his painting, and he became a leading figure in Noucentisme. His new language, based on an essential composition of clear structures and sober, transparent colours, clearly Mediterranean, would create a school within Catalan art. The following year, in 1911, Sunyer organised a personal exhibition at the Faianç Catalá which placed him, after Nonell's death, at the head of Catalan painting at the time. During the following years he travelled and exhibited in Europe, but returned to Catalonia at the outbreak of the First World War. Settled in Sitges, he nevertheless took part in the Paris and Barcelona Salons. After fleeing Spain because of the Civil War, he returned to Spain and settled in Barcelona in 1942. In 1949 he was awarded the Legion of Honour, and subsequently special galleries were dedicated to him at the Hispano-American Art Biennials in Barcelona. At the Havana Biennial in 1954, he was awarded the Grand Prize for a lifetime's work. An anthological exhibition was also held in Madrid in 1974, commemorating the centenary of his birth. Measurements: 44.5 x 31.5 cm; 57 x 44 cm (frame). Considered one of the maximum representatives of the noucentista style, Sunyer was the nephew of the painter Joaquim de Miró i Argenter, with whom he started painting. His work is particularly notable for his landscapes and female nudes, as well as his portraits, which are far removed from traditional painting. His compositions are an example of balance, always seeking the evocative power of images, figures and atmospheres. The portrait we are dealing with here perfectly reflects what Noucentisme meant in Sunyer's style: through delicate features of Cézannian heritage, Sunyer filters the evident post-Impressionist influence he received in an early and significant Parisian period (1896-1908), giving way to the pure essence and Mediterranean singularity of Sitges and Catalonia. After studying at the La Lonja School in Barcelona, Sunyer began his career as an illustrator of popular scenes in "La Vanguardia" in 1896. That same year he took part in the Fine Arts Exhibition. JOAQUIM SUNYER DE MIRÓ (Sitges, Barcelona, 1874 - 1956). "Peasant Woman Lying on the Harvest". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right area. Size: 44.5 x 34.5 cm; 48 x 38 cm (frame). Through an accurate female portrait, Joaquin Sunyer gives us his most noucentista face, leaving behind the bohemian atmosphere of Paris that determined a great part of his artistic production to focus on the peaceful and serene representation of the society and his own environment. Thus, we find ourselves before the portrait of a young peasant girl leaning against the cornfields, next to her sickle, whose psychology denotes the reserved, calm, balanced and moderate character of the composition. Through delicate features of Cézannian heritage, Sunyer filters the evident post-Impressionist influence that he received in a first and significant Parisian period (1896-1908), giving way to the pure essence and Mediterranean singularity of Sitges and Catalonia. Signed in the lower right area. Measurements: 91 x 69 cm. The work of Joaquín Sunyer always oscillated between the portrait and the landscape, becoming a magnificent observer of his time and of the society in which he lived. In this particular work, the artist presents us with a landscape view in which he introduces numerous elements that turn the work into a documentary image in which we can see the human figure, ruins, trees and a small chapel. The dark colours favour the expressiveness of this work conceived in depth on different planes. JOAQUÍN SUNYER DE MIRÓ (Sitges, Barcelona, 1874 - 1956). "Girl". Oil on tablex. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 90,5 x 58,5 cm. During the 19th century, beginning of the 20th century, the child portrait started to become more important, extending from the nobility to the bourgeoisie. This was largely due to a change in education, and in the way in which the relevance of children in the family environment was conceived. For this reason it is not surprising to find a work like this one, in which the boy is the only protagonist of the scene, unaccompanied by his parents. Considered one of the leading representatives of the noucentista style, Sunyer was the nephew of the painter Joaquim de Miró i Argenter, with whom he began to paint. Joaquín Sunyer is currently represented at the MACBA, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Reina Sofía National Art Centre in Madrid.
