    Jun. 20, 2024

HADDON HUBBARD SUNDBLOM (1899-1976) Evening by the Fire.

    Est: $15,000 - $20,000

HADDON HUBBARD SUNDBLOM (1899-1976) Evening by the Fire. Magazine illustration for "Home for Lunch," published in Ladies' Home Journal, March 1940. Oil on canvas. 27 x 32 inches. Signed "Sundblom" in lower left image. Haddon Sundblom was an illustrator celebrated for infusing his scenes with a warm and luminous quality, creating sunlit faces and figures that became his signature style. Sundblom employed the alla prima, or wet-on-wet, oil painting technique. This method requires the artist to apply each layer of paint while the previous layers are still wet, necessitating rapid and deliberate work to complete the painting in a single session. Sundblom's mastery of this technique is evident in the vibrancy and energy of his finished pieces, characterized by an economy of colors and brushstrokes. This particular painting exemplifies Sundblom's distinctive style, bathing the figures in the muted warmth of a glowing campfire at night. Surprisingly, Ladies' Home Journal chose to print this painting in grayscale, diminishing the impact of Sundblom's radiant work.

HADDON HUBBARD SUNDBLOM (American, 1899-1976) Naughty Santa, Playboy cover, December 1972 Oil on canvas 27 x 21 in. Signed lower left Playboy has only used around a half dozen fully painted covers (discounting the Bea Paul collages and Bunny Logos) rather than photographs, and this painting is the most important of those. It is by one of the originators of the pin-up genre, Haddon Sundblom, the artist in whose studio many of the best pin-up artists learned their craft, including Gil Elvgren, Al Buell, and Joyce Ballantyne amongst others; it is a Santa girl by the artist who defined the image of the modern Santa Claus in his series of ads for Coca Cola; it is one of the very few Pin-Ups by this master of Illustration art; and this painting has been noted as the artist's last assignment before his death in 1976 (as detailed in The Great American Pin-Up by Charles G. Martignette and Louis K. Meisel, Taschen, 1996). From the Collection of Craig Macmillan.
